There was this period in the late 90s where the roster was overblown and writers were removing X-Men one by one until we were left with this: Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Wolverine, Kitty, Rogue, Gambit, ...and Marrow.

Aside from the one hit Morlock, this was the first time in a long time the roster felt like it was back-on-track. Still... Marrow?

Yeah, that roster was IT. It was that run that made me a Deadpool fan, as well as a Psylocke fan.

3. XTreme wins because there wasn't enough of Bunn's.

This team was constructed with clear objectives and they worked in purpose and in chemistry. AvX broke it up but before that, it worked like a well oiled machine in tactics and chemistry.

Our beloved muties have had SO many EXQUISITE combinations, but the first ones that spring to mind are...


Carey's absolutely SUBLIME assembly for the Muir Island away team during Necrosha - Rogue, Nightcrawler, Magneto, Colossus, Psylocke, Trance, Blindfold and HUSK.

Whedon's Astonishing X-Men will forever be firmly seated in my X-pantheon of beloved teams, as will Gillen's EXTINCTION team.

Zeb Well's gave me LIFE when it was announced Magik would be reunited with her former teammates so the NEW MUTANTS (omg the Second Coming tie ins??!!!) is a precious gem as well.

And naturally, Yost and Kyle fostering (and yes, devastating) the Xavier Academy cadets, The NEW X-MEN, with Laura Kinney in tow, in my humble opinion, redefined teen X books.

Cyclops, Banshee, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Storm and Phoenix.
The Original Five plus Two
Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Ice-Man, The Beast, The Angel, Havok and Lorna Dane.

Mike Carey's team was really well-rounded and exciting. I don't want to see it recreated exactly, but I love the template of using some well known characters (Rogue, Iceman), junior team alumni (Cannonball), a rand-o (Omega Sentinel), and several wild cards (everyone else lol).

OG Generation X, X-Factor Investigations (originals + Shatterstar), Secret Wars II Uncanny roster, all-female X-Men team (both lineups), Morrison's New X-Men, original New Mutants (up to Magik), and the Extinction team are all BIG favorites for me.
