If memory serves, Blue was the team that Jim Lee wanted, and what he wanted, he got. The funny thing is that Gold is, by far, a more powerful roster.

Yeah I almost wish Excalibur had been folded into the X-Men following the Muir Island nonsense. We’d have had three teams of 6 X-men, each with a far more clear expertise:

Blue Team / covert operations
Nightcrawler lead, Psylocke telepath, Rogue muscle
Wolverine, Gambit, Shadowcat

Red Team / warzone intervention
Cyclops lead, Phoenix telepath, Colossus muscle
Banshee, Iceman, Meggan

Gold Team / flagship rescue team
Storm lead, Marvel Woman telepath, Captain Britain muscle
Beast, Archangel, Forge

I like your idea very much. The only one missing is Jubilee. I assume she'll be on the Blue Team.

Although if this had happened, the whole "thing" with Scott & Betsy would never have transpired and Bishop may not have been created.

God, how long did Gold last before X-editorial realized they put all the cool kids on Blue?

They had to invent Bishop, and then gave him the most chemistry with a a guy ON the Blue team. What a mess.

Honestly, I don't get the Blue/Gold love. Both of those early runs were pretty bad. Jim Lee only lasted like, what, 5 more issues after that original 3 issue run with Claremont. Sure his Omega Red design is slick, but that's about it. And then a Mojo story? Nope. I will give Gold that first story that introduced Fitzroy/killed the Hellions/and introed Bishop, but then they went to that stupid dimension with Mikal and then some more Morlocks nonsense. Neither of their original runs were that good, and they only started to get kinda okay when the rosters mixed back up again circa X-Cutioner's Song, and then Lobdell took the wheel and kinda made something of it. But really, other than Claremont's X-Men 1-3, that early Blue/Gold era was a mess!

The X-Men: Evolution's roster -- Professor X, Wolverine, Beast, and Storm as faculty and Cyclops, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Rogue, and Kitty Pryde as the core students -- is my preferred combo. I also liked how the later New X-Men stuff really focused on the younger students, not the famous adults.

I actually thought about that. I'd have moved Banshee and Jubilee to a Generation X book sooner, and have Bishop take his place on Red. With all the energy being thrown around in Red Squad firefights, I figured he'd be more useful than just slinging guns.

You're absolutely right.

If the "conversation" between Logan and Jubilee in X-Factor #70 was any indication, then Generation X would have happened sooner rather than later.
