Democrats Fall Short in Effort to Rebuke Administration on Russia Sanctions

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/16/u...sanctions.html

Senate Republicans on Wednesday narrowly staved off an effort by Democrats to deal the Trump administration’s Russia sanctions policy an embarrassing rebuke.

Eleven Republicans joined Democrats in a vote to enforce sanctions against the corporate empire of an influential ally of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, but the effort fell three votes short of the 60-vote threshold required to advance the measure. The vote was 57-42, with one Democratic senator not voting.

The sanctions against companies controlled by the influential oligarch, Oleg V. Deripaska, now seem destined to be lifted this week as part of a deal negotiated by the Treasury Department to reduce Mr. Deripaska’s ownership and control of the aluminum giant Rusal and two linked companies.

Sanctions against Mr. Deripaska personally, which had gone into effect last April, remain in force and would not have been affected by the Treasury Department decision or the Senate measure. Mr. Deripaska’s companies waged an aggressive lobbying and legal campaign against the sanctions last year. The administration first delayed putting sanctions on the companies into effect and then announced last month it would lift them entirely.
Republicans are the Party of Traitors.

(Also, the one Democratic Senator who did not vote was Bernie Sanders.)

Citing imaginary 'confusion' the Florida Gov is trying to not implement that - likely he will do his best to delay until it's too late to restore those rights before the 2020 election.

Senate Democrats fail to stop Trump administration from lifting sanctions on firms linked to Putin friend---- Sen. Bernie Sanders misses the vote; his spokesman says he was meeting with women who accused his 2016 presidential campaign of sexual misconduct.

Why Did Bernie Sanders Vote Against the Magnitsky Act?

The fact that Bernie Sanders (I-VT) voted against the so-called Magnitsky Act of 2012 imposing targeted sanctions on Russian oligarchs to punish the Putin regime for human rights abuses is often cited as “proof” by liberal conspiracy theorists that Sanders was somehow culpable in the Kremlin’s targeted effort to damage the candidacy of Hillary Clinton as part of their broader attack on the 2016 U.S. election.

What liberal conspiracy theorists won’t tell you is that Sanders was joined in voting nay by Carl Levin (D-MI), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Jack Reed (D-RI) none of whom stand accused by anyone of being Russian stooges.

What liberal conspiracy theorists won’t tell you is that the Obama administration opposed the Magnitsky Act. The administration flip-flopped only after the sanctions were attached to a bill normalizing trade relations with Russia, hence the bill’s official name: The Russia and Moldova Jackson-Vanik Repeal and Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012 (H.R. 6156).

What liberal conspiracy theorists won’t tell you is that Sanders voted for a second, more robust version of the Magnitsky Act in 2015.

What liberal conspiracy theorists won’t tell you is that Sanders supports imposing punitive sanctions targeting Putin and his oligarch cronies, supports the sprawling Russia counter-intelligence investigation of the 2016 election led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, denounces Russian aggression and Putin on a fairly regular basis, and during the 2016 presidential campaign supported sending more U.S. troops to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) Eastern European members to deter Russia from attacking them the way it attacked Ukraine in 2014.

Clearly Sanders is no Putin stooge.

As with everything in life, it’s all about the Benjamins, which leads to the following question: how many of those Republicans who voted against sanctions are in the back pocket of Deripaska?

Sanders Statement on New Iran, North Korea, Russia Sanctions
    Thursday, July 27, 2017
WASHINGTON, July 27 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement after voting against legislation that would impose new sanctions on Iran, Russia and North Korea:

"I am strongly supportive of sanctions on Russia and North Korea. I worry very much, however, about President Trump’s approach to Iran, especially in light of his recent comments that he will refuse to recertify Iran’s compliance with the nuclear agreement. The United States needs to engage in an even-handed approach to the crises in the Middle East, and find ways to address not only Iran's activities, but also Saudi Arabia's decades-long support for radical extremism. I think new sanctions on Iran at this time take us in a dangerous direction."

I just listed Sanders not being there because it wasn't in the article. I know his presence made absolutely no difference in what happened one way or the other, and he would not have supported selling out our country to the Russians.

    Talk about baggage.
First, you are just flatly wrong. Actually registered from '91 to '96, and voted Democratic party during one of those years. If you want to change it to "Supported", different discussion. Trying to frame it as "A Member For The Entire Time..." is just throwing something that has almost nothing to do with the truth out there.

As for that being comparable to Harris, Harris was at the head of an arm of government that was(at the very least) working in opposition to the interests of many groups of the Democratic base. Never mind taking direct shots at the poor, and openly showing a direct disregard for rule of law when she believed she knew better.

You are going to need a better set of excuses when you have that second group of issues to answer for. Never mind that she has shown almost none of Warren's ability to address where she has been in the wrong.

There, I would tend to agree. If either party is counting it as in their back pocket, they might be in for a surprise.
