So, wrestler New Jack has passed away.
Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence.

My next strongman competition is in September. I can’t wait.

I’m about to start playing dungeons and dragons again. I’m not sure about the character that I want to make. Anyone have any experience playing a rogue?

I have a little experience with them in 5th, if that's the edition being played.

Do you know what's allowed for the game(s) you plan to join yet?

We’ll be playing 5th edition. As far as I know anything goes.

Two words for you! Disney Princess!

Or Maybe you'd prefer to be The Avatar?

Tifa isn't nearly as God-like at suplexing stuff as ACTUAL FF7, but you work with what you've got.

Last, but certainly not least in the builds I'm going to link to, the best choice of them all! Incinaroar!

Forget race and class for a moment. Just describe the type of character you feel like playing in broad-brush terms.

Do you want to be a sneaky type, combat type, a spellcaster type, or a mix of those?

What type of campaign is your DM planning on running?

Also, what will the other PCs be? Party mix isn’t critical, but sometimes balance and blend of abilities is helpful.

Does your DM have access to all the sourcebooks, or are you limited to the Players’ Handbook stuff?

What levels will you be starting and finishing the campaign at? (No point picking a fancy sub-class if the campaign will be levels 1 & 2 only, and no point picking a sub-class with a great level 17 capstone ability, if you’re going to be playing from level 9 to 14).

    Are you considering multi-classing?

Attempting to reproduce other fictional characters in D&D? Ew.

I mean, don't get me wrong. There's nothing wrong with trying to emulate cool things from other places in D&D. Just that I find there's always either something wanted that's missing from the end result or something unwanted that's inseparable from the end result that ultimately makes said end result feel off.

And things feeling off is just... eww.

There's a lot here that makes sense to ask of someone looking for general character advice but which ultimately isn't relevant to the question actually being asked here.

    Speaking of which...

While they're not my favorite class (that'd be the monk), they have some of the most consistently good class features and probably some of the best class features (not named high level spellcasting) period.

Cunning Action = Do your main thing and then vanish, every round? Yes. Do you thing and just walk away, (mostly) without reprisal. Yep. Play keep away with everyone that's not a monk, while still doing your main thing. Neat.

Evasion = Cool guys don't look at explosions. Cooler guys can stand at ground zero and act like nothing's even happening.

Expertise (especially with Reliable Talent later on) = Don't even @ me if your skills aren't up to par. Focus on the skills that interest your character and (when you're not automatically succeeding on challenges involving said skills due to awesome and appropriate roleplay) take comfort in the fact you have the best consistent chance possible at success. I currently have a 5 foot nothing monk / rogue that prefers grappling and subsequently dunking/yeeting her enemies off high places (or jumping good, when no high places are available). Between my belt, expertise, and reliable talent most things don't even have a ghost of a chance of resisting the attempt.

Sneak Attack = The only consistently and reliably available source of burst/nova damage in the game. While it's not the best source of damage in an everything goes type game (or even in a feats + multiclassing allowed game), it's still decent, especially considering it uses absolutely no resources (other than what it takes for you to make an attack on a given turn).

While the various books available have decent subclass for the rogue which give said rogue options to lean into certain styles of play, for my platinum the best of these subclasses is the one that's in the freely available Basic Rules - the Thief.

Like, just look at Fast Hands (3rd level) man; the lad's not right.

The sheer number of things that allowing to you Sleight of Hand, use Thieves' Tools, or Use an Object as a bonus action enables is mindboggling. Poison your weapons on the fly and attack with them on the same turn. Deploy caltrops or ball bearings and watch/hear the lamentation of your pursuers. Burn a troll (or a different sort of troll) with your torch before gutting them like a fish. Yeet acid, alchemist's fire, holy water, oil - or what have you- at people (Yes. Though those are attacks and can be used with the Attack action, the default action for these attack is the Use an Object action). Make a dying ally stable, or (if you take the Healer feat) bring them back into the fight. The possibilities are theoretically endless.

And then there's Use Magic Device (13th level).

    Dripping with Ice? Nah.

Dripping with Magic? That's the ticket.

The power of being able to use magic items your class was never meant to have must not be underestimated.

I mean, you're not exactly a full spellcaster at the peak of their abilities and you're definitely not a member of Wish Club, but the Thief Rogue is up there with everything else.

I will say this about Rogues - it’s worth asking if your DM is using the Optional Class Features recently released in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. If so, there’s an option called something like Steady Aim, where you can give yourself advantage for your Sneak Attack without being reliant on hiding, your teammates being within 5’ of the opponent or any other situational advantages.

In terms of sub-class, all the PHB options are solid. Noldere’s given you a good rundown of the Thief, but the Assassin’s very, very strong (especially if you choose a complementary race if you want to optimise - Bugbear makes a great option) and is really neat for multi-classing with something like Gloom Stalker Ranger or Shadow Monk. The Arcane Trickster is the only magic user whose Mage Hand can actually be invisible, and is useful for picking locks, sleight of hand etc.

But even outside of the PHB, there aren’t many poor sub-classes for Rogue. Maybe Scout is a bit less interesting...? If you want that, why not go Ranger? But the rest are excellent.
