So, uh... This guy is an actual supervillain, right?

If anything I think dressing like that should just straight up turn you into a supervillain. o_O

I borrowed and read through the first two volumes of Demon Slayer from my public library.

It's an interesting plot idea, and art work is good, but based only on the first two volumes I found some issues.

The main one being the pacing. It mostly felt rushed, leaving some noticeable and unexplained plot holes that could have been resolved by just adding a few extra chapters to provide more detail to the story.

The Demons follow some tropes similar to those of western Vampires and Werewolves, which is fine.

Where does volume 2 get you to in terms of plot?

Also I'm curious about plotholes, Demon Slayer is pretty tightly written by and large.

Volume 2 ended with chapter 16. I can see an argument for it being tightly written, but for me it was too tightly written.

    spoilers:
First off, the way his family was killed and his sister was changed made even less sense after meeting Muzan Kibutsuji in Tokyo. Why would a demon like that be roaming around in the countryside, and why would he kill everyone in the family except Nezuko first? Why would he not have transformed Nezuko first and just have her eat her family and become a full demon? What were the circumstances?
    end of spoilers

    spoilers:
Second was the attacks Tanjiro uses, yet when he was training I didn't see any clear description of him learning these attacks. They had fancy names, but he didn't learn them from anyone as far as I could tell.
    end of spoilers

    spoilers:
Third was his sense of smell. It was almost supernatural, and it might have made more sense if there was some kind of explanation why he can smell things other humans can't.
    end of spoilers

For clairty, Chapter 16 is the issue where Tanjiro starts fighting the ball and arrow demon

From the top, I don't think any of these are plotholes per say. Contrivances perhaps but hardly plotholes. I'm also going to do my best to not get into spoilers ahead of where you are.

I don't really get this one?

    spoilers:
The time between Tanjirou's family being killed and him arriving in Tokyo and first encountering Muzan is more than 2.5 years. Muzan, as the series will go on to show, moves around all kinds of places over long periods of time and makes demons a lot. That's his whole thing. Him being in the woods is like... contrived at best? But it's also the inciting incident of the story.

To your secondary query about why he only turned Nezuko into a demon and killed everyone else. Muzan doesn't really care about individual demons or humans at all. He kills people to feed on them and makes some of them into demons. Without getting into specifics of future events; he refers to himself as a natural disaster rather than being some kind of directly malicious being. Why would he bother with some elaborate cruelty like forcing Nezuko to eat her own family when he flatly does not care about her or her family?
    end of spoilers

    spoilers:

    end of spoilers
    spoilers:
He was taught them by Urokodaki during that whole year and a half they spent training on a mountain. They are obliquely mentioned during the training montage as forms. The series doesn't bother to go through the specifics of individual techniques because it's not really important to the plot, it shows you the techniques when they become relevant to the story.
    end of spoilers

    spoilers:
Third was his sense of smell. It was almost supernatural, and it might have made more sense if there was some kind of explanation why he can smell things other humans can't.
    end of spoilers
That doesn't really have an explanation, but again it's not really important. spoilers:
Each of the principle characters have a heightened ability relating to one of the five senses.
end of spoilers It's like... a loose theme rather than something meaningful to the plot.

But yeah, Demon Slayer is tightly focused on it's character drama and moving forward with action rather than getting bogged down in mechanical specifics. Gives it a lot of momentum but if you're the sort of person who want everything explained then it might not work for you.

I really need to get back to watching anime. These "superhero" phases I experience are just supposed to last a couple of weeks, not entire months.

Wouldn't be so bad if not for the constant feeling I'm missing out on stuff I would probably find totally awesome.

So, Bruce Timm is planning on reviving the Batman Animated series on HBO Max. Any thoughts on that?
    Ichigo: What even *are* you?!

Kenpachi: Some say my mother was a train. Some say that I'm a rejected Godzilla monster too strong for the series canon. But everyone says: I'M THE KEEEEENPACHIIIIII!!!!

Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence.
