damn you, phantom post.
Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence.

here is the gist of it.
spoilers:end of spoilers
it takes place a few years after the first game. ellie had found out about what Joel did at the end of the first game, which kind of soured their relationship but they were still close. then you start playing as a transgender woman named Abby. she and her group are near tommy's settlement and get overrun by clickers. joel and Tommy save them and head back to their place. Tommy and Joel foolishly trusts them outright for no reason and reveal their names to them. this sets them off as Abby shotguns Joel in the leg. turns out that abby's father was a firefly and one of the nameless doctors that Joel killed to save Ellie. Joel, not knowing who she is, just says to finish him off. abby says he doesn't get to die so quickly and starts beating him with a golf club. ellie finds them and gets held down as Abby kills Joel with the golf club. but for some reason, she leaves both Tommy and Ellie alive. both of them swears vengeance on her and goes after her and her group. along with them is ellie's new girlfriend, dina. they find Abby but she beats the **** out of them because she is really swole. she doesn't kill them because she finds out that mina is pregnant from her ex and allows them to live.
a year passes and Ellie lives with dina and her son, JJ. Tommy comes to the farm and tells Ellie that he found Abby and plans to go after her. ellie wants no part of it because she likes her life with dina and JJ but she is suffering from severe PTSD from watching joel die. so she decides to go after abby. dina tells her straight out that if she goes after Abby, she will leave with JJ. ellie decides to go anyway. at the this point, abby and her adoptive younger brother had been captured a crazy religous cult and she was really fucked up. ellie goes in and kills a crap ton of people just to get to abby. when she finds her, they have a fight and ellie starts to drown her but at the last second, decides to let her live and leaves with her brother. Ellie, tired and missing two fingers from her fight with Abby, returns to her farm only to find it empty as dina has left with JJ. ellie tries to play on joel's guitar but can't because of her missing fingers. then she just leaves it at the farm and walks out of the farm.
From what I've heard, the person who wrote the first game (Amy Hennig) was forced out of the company between the two games
I am loving the game so far tbh.

Joel is barely in the game and then he dies by golf club. i'm not opposed to Joel dying. i hate how he dies. i mean, in the first game, joel's whole thing was his wariness and his problem with trusting people. it took him the whole game to trust Ellie and he came to view her like the daughter he lost. in this one, he immediately trusts a group of randos he literally just met and then got ambushed. they had to make Joel stupid to kill him.

Honestly you could've summed it up with:
Writer self-inserts and goes out of his way to **** on the previous game because he doesn't like it. Then gets mad when, 1) his sue of a new main character is poorly written, 2) the writing overall is bad, 3) they took a decent stealth/shooter rpg and made it a painful walking simulator, 4) the people who waited six years for a sequel are pissed about it.
Yeah, but if you... man, we're getting into weird analogy territory, like if you disintegrated Superman's arms he wouldn't be able to go "fool! Little did you know that my arms and I are one and can be remade from me!" and will his arms back into being from pure nothingness. - Pendaran

So Last of Us 2 basically decided to go whole hog on the "True Art is Angsty" trope to the point they fell headlong into the "Darkness Induced Audience Apathy" trope. Unless they make a Last of Us 3, this is pretty much a downer ending.
Hell, The Walking Dead Telltale games, for all the darkness and death it has, ended with Clementine in a good place. She has her adopted little brother, a love interest (either Violet or Louis depending on player choices), a place to call home and a group of friends/a surrogate family.
