In examining what we take for granted as historical facts, one must take care to consider what agendas may be at hand.

In this case, whoever wrote the Prose Edda likely was attempting to establish legitimacy in a similar way, by creating a connection where there was none before. Writing to your audience is one thing, but appealing to the powers that by subsuming local beliefs into a canon of literary works well-regarded by the ruling body just makes sense.

In addition, the mythological canon of the Greeks...they called the Scythians Amazonian women because they had long hair, rode horses, and shot bows, so I'm kinda skeptical what their idea of a Aethiopian was.
    1. The story I've heard is, essentially, that the Prose Edda was attempting to rewrite the Norse Myths in a form that would be acceptable to Christian rule.

    2. To the Greeks, Aethiopians were the Kushites. This is based on Greek translations of the hebrew bible. One Greek Scholar, Strabo, asserted that the aethiopians looked like Asians (By which he meant people from the south of India)

So we're in agreement here; bowlderized myth and cultural practice allows quick-witted editors to preserve them via some means of legitimization, and the ancient Greeks had a skewed world view.

So, this week in Smoke No One Wanted: Side Hustle Edition I...

    • Manage to go even further beyond with my loathing of (repairing) anything Apple.
    • Discovered a new horrifying world wherein the phrase "worse than nothing" is not only applicable, but an understatement. Honestly, it shouldn't even be possible for the state of the education system to be this bad.
    • Get persuaded to deal with an All-in-One machine *cries inside*

Agreed on the first. With the second it's less of a skewed world view and more "Words meant different things back then"

My understanding is that pretty much all of the Norse myths that have survived to today are the versions that Christians found acceptable to survive.

Test results back: negative. It's mostly clearing up now. Feeling largely less-stressed.

Thanks to all who sent good wishes.
    Why are we here?

"Superboy Prime (the yelling guy if he needs clarification)..." - Postmania
"...dropping an orca whale made of fire on your enemies is a pretty strong opening move." - Nik
"Why throw punches when you can be making everyone around you sterile mutant corpses?" - Pendaran, regarding Dr. Fate

At some point in this fight either Zuko or Shoto have to say "That's rough buddy."

    Ichigo: What even *are* you?!

Kenpachi: Some say my mother was a train. Some say that I'm a rejected Godzilla monster too strong for the series canon. But everyone says: I'M THE KEEEEENPACHIIIIII!!!!
