    It's been a week and it looks like the Honkening ain't stoppening. What's more, Provincial Premiers in the interior are planning to acquiesce to the demands, lest they get barred in too.

    Given the restrictions were a provincial matter in the first place, well, suppose the statement's been made...to the Provincial leaders, who are responsible for the mandates in the first place. A whole week later, and the convoy plans to take it to Provincial capitals, but because they consolidated into picketing Trudeau, someone whose mind they were never out to change in the first place, the people in Ottawa gotta deal with this demonstration which has nestled in and molted into some sort of weird excuse for a block party.

    Like, they blocked off the soup kitchens, so they build an unzoned building on their occupied grounds as a cooking station. I'd almost be impressed if this didn't seem to be completely about optics at this point.

    Yet, people from all over Canada - and outside, hmm - are buying into the spirit of its message to the tune of nearly $10 million in donations. Certainly it'd be a mistake to write them off as 'nothing', but I'm a cynic, this was never about having a good faith dialogue when minds have already been made up. I can only remain tired from a distance, it's all so petty and unnecessary.

    This is really taking the country in an ugly direction, especially since the governmental response appears to be ‘cave, cave, cave’.

    But then, so many of the Premiers are Cons, and this is their base.

    And to think that in 2016 many in the US were half-joking about running off to live in Canada in order to escape the impending Far Right Apocalypse. Now it seems that Canada isn't doing so well in this area either. It's like a Plague of Idiots, spreading faster than COVID.

    I used to say 'Canada is about ten years behind the US in following trends' (ie, bad ones). Now? Maybe 5 years, if less.

    ...that's not to say Canada is 'better' than the US or a great place for everyone or anything like that. It's not; we just have better PR. But even that veneer has worn away in the last few years, with the world becoming aware that Canada is a pretty shitty place in a lot of ways for a lot of people.

    Ah, how the former colonies have grown up ;_;

    I'm reminded of Tony Benn's words to Michael Bolton during a debate about the Iraq war - "you're a declining empire as we once were,"

    Michael Bolton? What was his response? “How am I supposed to live without you?”…?

    Been away from a computer today, because IT'S MY BIRTHDAY and I was at a get-together!

    Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence.
