Doesn't help too that, the discourse surrounding this show became politically charged pretty much out the gate. So criticism has to be done very carefully, and most people just don't want to bother with the potential landmine.
I'd also point out that, as time passes, it becomes more and more obvious that while Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings wasn't a good adaptation, the story (both plot, and characters), and cinematography still hold up. Compared to those, RoP is essentially the equivalent of a first year's film project if they were given a budget of ~60 million per episode.
