I'm kind of enjoying the high fucking drama of it all.

I'm impressed by how this situation seems really awful for both sides and really feels it. I don't really like or care about either group of characters that much but the writing and setup is strong enough that I'm invested and engaged by it.

But... I really feel like some named characters should have hit the floor by now. It would help sell things.

Yeah, the endless 'oh, I'm hurt more!' while a gazillion soldiers die around all of the named characters is becoming old. Seriously. It's actually removing some of the gravitas - it's kind of 'yeah, okay, another injury, I get it, it was exciting the first few times but now it just feels like you're dragging this out and perhaps are having problems killing characters in a gruesome war story.'

I mean, I think I know how this ends based on the source material, but if that 'end' doesn't start with the newest 'Ohmygod, what do we see coming on the horizon?' at the end of THIS chapter...that will be, like, the fifth time we've had a 'but this new thing changes the tide of the battle!' in this struggle? That's getting old as well.

'High fucking drama' indeed, but there's a point where that gets dragged out so long it becomes wearisome, especially when there aren't any really sharp inflection points like, as you note, name-level characters dropping.

Sword of Doom (1966): Not from the past 5 years, but something I've just been meaning to check out. A simpler story about a really bad samurai dude. Super well shot and established in atmosphere. But not a lot to it besides the main plot and character.

I remember that one. Dude was pretty evil.
