Even with the new vaccines on the way, I think it'll still be a long time before people are eager to go to movie theaters. Should have done this with tenet too.

Tenet was the sacrificial lamb they sent out to show that sending any movie to the theaters right now guaranteed a bomb. Also to assuage Nolan’s ego since he was demanding they put it in theaters the twit.

well I guess WB is going to take the loss on Wonder Woman 84 and hope it at least bumps subscribers for HBO Max
not sure why they wouldn't charge some type of fee to access the movie though

Mulan already got bad press for that and was gonna be free on the service weeks later.

Plus HBO Max doesn't have the amount if subscribers to pull something like this.

Disney is not going to cave in. They would rather wait and toss out a Marvel movie every week than do what WB did.

Disney and AT&T are in different places. The lack of movies in theaters has hurt them a great deal, but the one part of their company that was actually doing extremely well was streaming. Their stock price actually went up despite massive losses from theme parks and movies because D+ has been doing well. They could potentially release Black Widow on it, but the service is doing fine without it.

HBO Max, meanwhile, did not perform to AT&T's expectations, so they're clearly thinking putting a huge tentpole blockbuster on it will drive subscriptions. If they're smart they'll take away the free trial period to stop people from making essentially burner accounts just to watch WW and then cancel before they have to pay.
