Sure they can have some level of hero. I don't think even most heels are absolute evil, let alone faces. I'm just saying plenty of big name faces can be considered bad people by any reasonably objective standard. Being a good person isn't necessarily a prerequisite. It's just a matter of being entertaining to the point where you want to be cheered.
You have to do something to be cheered.
Austin vs the evil McMahon was the reason why he became a cheered face.
Even if the protagonist is a jerk, the story must show that they are going after bigger jerks. The Punisher is basically a serial killer, but he put against far worse people.
If you have a heel who gets cheered for doing horrible things, then you are not booking the heel right. I remember
Booker T didn't want to work with the NWO, because their was no way he was going to get over as a face against heels who get cheered.
SUre you have to be cheered, but in modern wrestling fans will often cheer for even faces doing things which objectively can be considered bad. Again, Taker arguably tried murdering 3 guys in his last match.
Modern fans don't necessarily factor moraltiy into who they cheer for. WHen were often cheering for Bray Wyatt over Cena when they FIRST feuded... one is practically the personification of good while the other is practically the personification of evil, but we still got the reaction we got. And it's not even the booking... the face was booked as a proper face while the heel was booked as a proper heel. But we got the reaciton we got despite that.
Wrestling is wrestling. It's just weird that way sometimes.
Some fans don't measure morality but kids do. Even parents do. Cena would not be as big as he is , if wasn't presented as a modern day Captain America.
My bigger point, is what Booker brings up. Cool heels don't get people over. Wrestling is not about getting one guy over. Gray characters as a norm suck. One great point that Tazz brings up, is that he hates that everyone is a shooter. Everybody is this MMA specialist. This makes a real shooter not special. Everybody can do a moonsault, which makes it not special.
Modern day wrestling hampers itself by constantly trying replicate the NWO,Austin, and Rock dynamic. Instead of copying a formula that is much more successful which is hero movies. Fandom wants something to believe in. Billions of movie dollars say this. The energy that Bryan and Kofi brought to the ring because they represented something bigger than being cool.
So who you guys got winning the MITB
I got Aleister Black winning the men's .
I got Shayna winning the Women's . I would prefer Asuka though.
I'll go with AJ Styles and Shayna.
AJ doesn't NEED MitB per say... but since we have a face champion and Drew likely isn't winning the belt anytime soon, it works better. And Shayna is a pretty easy choice as she's still sort of feuding with Becky anyways, and MitB allows for a protected loss to Becky.
I honestly don't know here....
Men's: Baron Corbin (It fits his character perfectly, giving it to him will enrage the WWE Universe and they know it)
Women's: Becky is confronting the winner, so I'm going with a RAW winner here. I think Nia is Becky's next feud and the winner cashes in on Becky after a bitter Nia knocks her out. So I'm going with Asuka--I actually think Shayna turns face relatively soon.
As someone who has done Raw/Nitro Reviews in the past from 1995 to where I left off in 1997.... Austin didn't start getting cheered against McMahon. He had started getting over as a face right with the Bret Hart feud. A fact that the WWF then was stunned as the heroic Bret Hart was starting to get booed for his act against Stone Cold. To them then they had no clue what was happening because again ...Austin was this evil swearing heel who acted out of control at times and yet was getting more over.
Then they decided with the real Attitude Era hitting (It began that spring of 1997 with Austin kicking off RAW with this in a form before they added his bloody face from Wrestlemania 13)....
The decision was made to turn Austin face without really changing his character. They had seemingly learned from the mistakes of Diesel turn where he went from cool bodyguard heel to suddenly trying to be a 90's version of Hogan. But yeah McMahon was a great heel for him later but he got over as a face against Bret .

Well **** this guy
I could see Aleister Black winning if this were a regular Money In The Bank match, but with this whole "Climbing the Corporate Ladder" stuff, I think a sneaky heel like Corbin is more likely to win.
Watching television is not an activity.
So the four way tag match is on now
King Corbin will win, The E knows how much heel heat he gets, second choice is Black. Women's, probably Shayna, but I have a feeling its going to be Nia, to help set the eventual Bayley / Sasha breakup in motion.
