Thumbs up One of the worst films I've ever seen!

    LUTHER: THE FALLEN SUN (2023)
    dir. Jamie Payne
To quote Alyssa Edwards: this was garbage, mamaaaaaaa!!! I mean what an atrocious film! If you like this film, I can only politely tell you your knowledge and understanding of cinema must be so basic and illogical that a law should be past to make it a literal crime for you to be part of filmmaking. I don’t know who Hattie Morahan is, but she needs to quit acting. She’s awful. Truly awful. Emma Watson is more truthful and honest in her performances (and that’s a low f*ckin’ bar, let me tell you). The plot made no sense. It took suspension of disbelief to a level no sane person could withstand. Luther, as a character, had lost all realism. His once strong exterior that could hold his own in a fight has transformed into superhero mastermind ninja, taking on an entire prison of kung-fu warrior prisoners (all more concerned with fighting Luther - one at a time - than with escaping). Also, I tried to use IMDB to name and shame the fight choreographer but was unable to locate one, perhaps that was the problem. Piss poor choreographing, please go back to fight school. Luther as a series used to be more akin to Cracker with a bit of camp; this is now more akin to Crank (2006) with a bit of horror. Just abysmal. Tons of forced conflict, none of it set-up. Nothing was earned. Even Andy Serkis couldn’t save it (he was at-least not sh*t, which for this film, was the highest accolade you could aim for). That said his wigs were sh*t; never hire this hair&make-up department! ONLY Dermot Crowley remained enjoyable. The rest fell into one of three categories: the lost, the bad or the talentless. This was trash, and if you enjoyed it, by the power of association you are now also trash! You’re a trash garbage person for liking this film. Shame on you! Lastly I don’t know who casting directors Denise Chamian and Priscilla John are, but after seeing this I’m not sure I want to know. Fundamentally BAD at casting.

I saw two movies at the comic shop today.

The first was The Wrath of Becky which played like a teenage girl as "Jane Wick" kind of story. The second was Miranda's Victim which was the based on the true story of the woman who's brutal kidnapping and rape led to The Miranda Warning becoming a rule of thumb. It was a jam packed cast with tons of recognizable actors and it was a good story well told.

    Reptile

Good to see Alicia Silverstone again. Benicio del Toro always seems like a bad guy to me, even if when he plays a good guy.

The Killer on netflix. Pretty decent hitman flick. The voice over sounded like the computer from 2001.

Blue Beetle- Yeah this was bad.

This was… such a fascinating film to dissect. On the one hand I feel it had many faults. They didn’t explore the world enough, or get into the minutiae of how Earth and Air fit into the social structure of the city. The actual plot is threadbare, a lot was silly and not believable (in the sense of character beats, choices and assumptions that felt unearned… I’m not talking about the literal believably of fantastical elements… ba-doom-CHA). Also the city Councillors JUST LEFT A FLOOD-ABLE HOLE in a chunk of the city wall and didn’t fix it??? Surely someone needed to get fired? That could have cost countless lives, no? AND YET… the relationship between Ember and Wade is possibly the most mature, complex and beautiful pairing in all of Disney and Pixar combine. This was grown up exploration of relationships! I adored it, and praise it and could have watched their partnership unfold for hours. Their flaws, hopes, failings, quirks, stubbornness, wishes, tantrums… it was all so complex and intertwined AND NON-JUDGEMENTAL! The moral of the story was not “you must learn to control your temper” (like in Beauty and the Beast (1991)), instead it was ‘you have a temper, let’s explore that, talk about it but also it’s you, please don’t feel it’s a failing it’s who you are and I like you regardless’. THAT is adulting! That is a true relationship! Loved loved loved it!

I totally agree Elemental might be one of my favorite surprises for the entire year in general or just for rom-com stuff, even up with No Hard Feelings including R-rated live fare.

Regarding The Killer ( 2023)...I watched it and mostly enjoyed it but I have a couple of nick picks... spoilers:
I wish they did the opening failed assassination differently. I get why it was about him timing it to the exact second, but seriously? In real life Lee Harvey Oswald got off three shots with a 2nd hand rifle and killed a president. Make believe master hitman should have just shot a second time after he hit the escort and he probably would have completed the job.
    end of spoilers

And this cuz I think recognize where the scene took place...spoilers:
In the third act, dude buys some illegal guns from a dude in Chicago. I'm pretty sure this is taking place in Lower Wacker Ave. For people who don't know Wacker has an over street level and an under street level. If you've seen the Blues Brothers or The Dark Knight/Batman Begins, these movies had scenes shot there. Anyway, they do their deal right by some stairs, and in real life party goers and tourist regularly those stairs to get from Upper to Lower Wacker. Why are you doing your deal where any rando could walk by and see you?
    end of spoilers

Having said that, I did think it was funny that spoilers:
Fassbender's fake IDs were the names of 70's sit-com characters. And that the tech millionaire guy was a ******* wearing a Sub Pop T-shirt. For people who don't know Sub-Pop was an indie record label in the 90's that blew up during the grunge/alternative rock craze. It's like, "Of course he's bad! He's still wearing this **** in the 2000's." I say this as big fan of that stuff back in the day
    end of spoilers

Also, I appreciate all The Smiths music, but I don't think it worked the way the wanted it too.

    Babylon

    Very boring movie.

With that being sad, I would love to attend to the party like from the opening of the movie.

Spider-man, Across the Spiderverse. Wow, just so much going on. A movie I have to watch again, soon.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

American Fiction—-AMC had a blind showing. We didn’t know what the movie was going to be until we got there.
Gotta say. A few Academy Awards are in this film. I’m not going to go into detail but if you love great movies that are well written and acted then you will love this.
I’d give it 2 thumbs up. 10 out of 10.

The New World (2005/2006) for, I think, the first time, very very good. Also a long overdue rewatch of Christopher Nolan's The Prestige (2006) which I enjoyed far more in this second viewing, I understood the ending far more this time around, an ending that strikes at many different points all at the same time. Nearly an overambitious ending, sorta throwing out a theme in the 11th hour, but still, the film is better than i once thought.
Things I love: Batman, Superman, AEW, old films, Lovecraft

Grant Morrison: “Adults...struggle desperately with fiction, demanding constantly that it conform to the rules of everyday life. Adults foolishly demand to know how Superman can possibly fly, or how Batman can possibly run a multibillion-dollar business empire during the day and fight crime at night, when the answer is obvious even to the smallest child: because it's not real.”

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore ( 1974) directed by Martin Scorsese, starring Ellen Burstyn. Kris Kristofferson, Diane Ladd, Harvey Keitel. Dramatic Comedy about a single mother who moves to Arizona with her young son in an attempt to start her life over after the death of her husband. Alice dreams of being a singer but is sidetracked by her need to make money and eventually falls for a charming rancher.

Burstyn does a great job and I enjoyed the film's loose plot. It's funny, I think alot of people forget that Scorsese did this movie. I don't know if it's because it's thought of as a "women's film" or what. Also, it inspired long running sit-com "Alice"
