I came here to say this, just probably not as well. I had read King's short story it was based on and that actually made the ending even more of a knife to the heart. That ending was numbingly good, I only wish the build to it would've been as good. Perfect for this thread though.
Were talking about the one with The rock and Karl Urban? Havent seen that in a long time. But yea I'm curious which way he meant it. Cause that ending with the FPS POV I assume was either completely hated or some people maybe liked it for being something original. But yea I dont recallt the movie being very good. Maybe its time for a rewatch
Superman IV has a rather fun ending, at least that bit is a good thing to say about it.
Batman & Robin is one of the best bad movies out there, and the ending is strangely good for what the movie is like.

Why go through an entire movie to see the hero beat the big bad supernatural evil, only for it to walk away at the end. So everything was for nothing. Hate that.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!
Boy oh boy. Amazing story you shared.
And your assessment of the movie was spot on. The movie is just one of despair and FINALLY Gary gets his girl. And then James Ingram starts singing and it is OVER. The look on his boy's face. The first 90 minutes was, as you say, bad generic -- they all got crabs, I seem to recall. The last two minutes make LAV a classic.
