Or they might have just figured that putting Riri into the sequel of a billion dollar box office darling was a great way to put a ton of eyes on her and drum up hype for her D+ show.

But yeah, having to deal with Riri on top of everything else.....I feel really bad for everyone involved here. This movie has felt cursed from the start, and at this point I'm just hoping it manages to avoid being a complete trainwreck. The cast and crew and wonderful, but Chadwick, starting production so soon after he died, the pandemic, on-set injuries.....what a uphill battle this entire production must have been to make.

My expectations for BP2 are incredibly low. I'm just hoping that whatever the film does, it doesn't throw the Panther franchise into the gutter. Just....let this film establish a viable, working new status quo and hopefully the third film and appearances in other MCU projects can level off whatever failings this movie has, and put Wakanda back on top. I definitely don't think I'll walk out of theaters for BP2 with everyone yelling "Wakanda Forever!" in triumph, like we did the last time, but hopefully nobody will leave utterly disgusted, burning their T'Challa t-shirts as they go.
It seems like they've been throwing in Young Avengers or new teen heroes in for marketing/story reasons.

America Chavez was originally planned to be slotted into NWH and was then in MoM even though she's not really known for associating for either characters. But part of it was the Multiverse.

Just looking at the box office and I can see that Thor 4 is experiencing a pretty huge drop.

I'm not surprised at this at all, Thor 4 IMO is probably the worst Thor movie thus far (yes, worse than Dark World).

Taika Waititi (and Hemsworth) really messed up here. As an aside, Waititi should dial back his on and off-screen persona of "I don't care about anything, everything is funny and nothing matters", it really came through Love and Thunder and it completely messed up the movie.

At this rate I’m just hoping they’ll leave the door open for a T’Challa recast as a variant in the future.

MoM was supposed to come out before NWH. Dr Strange was originally going to be familiar with the Multiverse with Chavez now a part of his supporting cast. Due to COVID and various complications, the movies changed release dates so NWH had to undergo changes so Dr Strange knew nothing about the Multiverse and Chavez had to be removed.

She was announced around the time WV and F&tWS was coming out. We just assumed that she was going to show up in Armor Wars.

Coogler's BP work center around the African vs African American experience and he likes his female heroes. So I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to introduce Iron heart as a friendly rival to Shuri. Nearly every Phase 4 project has introduced a legacy character and Riri just happened to be one of them.

It seems that after Chadwick's death, Marvel is dividing his lines and roles among the supporting cast but without the 'center' i.e T'Challa/Black Panther to hold it all together, who knows how well this is going to work out.

I would imagine RiRi was always going to be involved.

But IronHeart wasn't. Just tease RiRi and her brain in whaever Wakandan institute type thing and then she shows up in her TV show or post scene as an actual hero.

$43-44M would be a $100M drop between its first and second weekend and a 70% drop! This would be the worst MCU drop, ahead of both Black Widow and Spider-Man: NWH (68% 2nd wknd drops).

Horrific Drop, like I said was going to happen but someone went "well actually" and compared it to ragnorak.

The word of mouth for this film is horrendous. Even the people who liked it just... like it lol. No ones gushing about it, no one seems to love it.

I seem to like it more than most here and even I just 'like" it lol. But I like Dark World so I obviously have no taste anyway lol

With the movies goign to D+ so quickly now and with soooooo much MCU content out... there is no rush to go to MCU movies that are "ok."

And looking at the upcomign slate... this is the last MCU movie i'll plan to see in the theaters for a looooooooooooooooooooooong time (blade, maybe) unless word of mouth is incredible. I can easily wait 45 days or whatever.

Isn't it still a pandemic movie market though? I don't know what the other top movies right now are doing but i don't think one can be expecting Thor to have post pandemic numbers comparable to Ragnarok.

I know for me it's the reason i have gone yet. I am still nervous about being in a closed off space with potentially a bunch of people and i still wear a mask when i'm out so i think about the comfortability of it in the theatre as well.

I think that excuse died with NWH destroyed the box office.

And then strange did 950+. top gun did 1.2 billion

Is it a new type of market? Sure. Can you still make a billion? absolutely.

The first weekend numbers pointed to the fact people were excited for this movie and wanted to see it.

Different audience bases? NWH (smh i had to google to find out it's no way home. lol)/Strange/ Top Gun would have a very similar audience whereas Thor would potentially have a more diverse one. I think Thor will have a more steady in take but who knows.

    That's still a big drop.

Wasn't expecting Top Gun to do so well either. That's two Marvel movies (MoM and Thor 4) that's had a lackluster performance.

    Let's see how Marvel responds.

We've had dull years in the MCU before. I remember IM3 and Thor 2 being very lackluster then Winter Soldier came and blew us all away. We have more content now as well so the results are more mixed as well.

MoM made $954 million. How is that "lackluster?"

    It's not.

However we are now seeing if it's a film folks WANT to see-they are going no matter Covid or anything else.

Now the issue will be how does that work for diverse films like BP WF and even Disney's Strange Worlds.

The first few things about Strange Worlds was about the biracial black kid. Now all the sudden they are focusing on the Dad.

I'm honestly not sure what Strange World's is or how it relates to what we're discussing with the MCU having a lackluster performance?
