-The official art for the Fantastic Four seem to hint that the movie is set in an alternate universe; a hyper advanced 1960's. I have to say I am *marvelling* (pun fully intended) at the simplicity of it. All those theories about the FF being mind controlled or my own theory of Kang trapping them in an alternate universe but the solution was simple all along; alternate universe, set in the 60's. I bet the story is going to be a simple three act structure; the FF fight Doom bots in the opening, come back to find that Galactus has sent his herald to earth and the rest of the movie is them trying to stop Galactus. The end tag would set up Secret Wars.
I bet the X-Men movie that's currently in the works is the same; new cast, alternate universe, just a simple straight forward movie followed by an end tag for Secret Wars. I hope the new X-Men movie goes for a retro vibe as well.
The end result of Secret Wars would be the timelines for the 199999-MCU, X-Men and FF timelines combining into one so it will be as though they've always existed as one unified timeline. Cue flashbacks to WW2 with Chris Evans as Cap teaming up with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine to liberate a concentration camp including a young Erik Lensherr (similar to X-Men Evolution). Or a flashback to Stark and Reed bantering in a lab. A 2 second clip showing the FF and X-Men getting dusted during Infinity War. A dialogue or clip here explaining that the FF and X-Men were busy dealing with other stuff while the Avengers were fighting Loki/Ultron/Thanos.

The idea of the FF movie taking place in a retrofuturistic 60s sound amazing and now I'm going to be depressed if it isn't true.
I don't know if that would be as fitting for X-Men, but I wouldn't be against it either. The most recent X-Men films were all period pieces and I loved that aspect to them, but it might be redundant at this point.
The only bummer about the Shalla Bal thing is that the story of Norrin Radd being so inspired by humanity that it brings out his own compassion and causes him to rebel against Galactus is one of THE classic Lee/Kirby stories and an iconic piece of Marvel and FF history. Stan Lee frequently said how much he loved the Silver Surfer and how he was one of his favorite Marvel characters. So I feel like removing that character and replacing it with Shalla Bal is a more egregious thing than they realize. Norrin Radd was the heart of that story and it's an all-time classic story. And I honestly doubt they have any story or character reason for using Shalla beyond performative progressivism. I agree that representation is important, but I also think preserving these characters and the soul of these stories is important, so it's disappointing on that level.
If I had to guess they’ll probably wait till after Secret Wars to age him up. Damson Idris and Y’lan Noel (who actually expressed interest in playing T’Challa) would be great choices. Another actor who expressed is Brandon G. Alexander.

But my main issue with aging up junior is that they’ll have to do it in a way where the other characters won’t become old as hell as a result. With that said they’ll probably have to take inspiration from Hickmans secret wars to where the characters were placed in stasis. If it were up to me I’d have the main heroes (Shuri, Shang-Chi, etc.) placed in stasis while junior is left to age naturally. Bam, that way you have an adult T’Junior ready to go after Kang is dealt with.

Good Lord, MCU studio execs talking about alternate timelines is the equivalent of MAGA personalities talking about "Radical Left Democrats" to me. Boring and cringe.
Going only by the pix I found. Idris reads younger than Majors for me. Might be the muscle bulk. I'd buy him (as pictured below) as a young Avengers age appropriate.
I suppose more to the point of the question of "Why not make him Kang?", the answer would generally be..."because we weren't talking about Kang".
