From what I've read it seems mostly about consolidating different but similar jobs?MOSes from the various existing armed forces into their own branch to help stream line the duties and funding for them, also freeing the (mostly)Air Force from certain responsibilities and narrowing their focus. Right now it looks like it would mostly be responsible for Satellite related work and developing new technologies with the intention of expanding as new tech becomes available. Idea's been kicked around for a while and was honestly probably always going to eventually happen regardless of who was in power when it did.

Perhaps, but even if that's the case, it could have been done better. It didn't have to be a separate branch of the military. Also, from what I've read there is a quote, i think it's from Pence, about the U.S. dominating Space in an aggressive way. I don't have the exact quote.

Basically, it could have been done quietly and not been given a name that makes Anime Fan-boys and girls, or the Star Wars/Star Trek crowd get all giggly.

Consolidating and streamlining, I can get behind if it is done to be more efficient. But if other countries see this as a threat, it could escalate out of control.

Yeah, Pence calls it the 'Next Battlefield'. I'm sure that is making the Astronauts in the International Space Station feeling warm and safe right now. Not to mention how other countries are looking at that.

Not one whit more than the Chinese would care about the legality of dumping dirt on rocks sticking out of The South China Sea and declaring them islands that extend the boundaries of China's sovereign waters.

The administrative creation is idiocy; The USN and USAF could handle this without the bloat that another Department will bring (of course, the contracts associated with the bloat is likely a good portion of the real reason behind this).

All that said, it's little short of certain that the Chinese will push into space, and will dismiss all extant international understandings that the heavens are locations no nation can claim as irrelevant or inapplicable. Unless they know there are rapidly deployable, heavily armed assets ready to debate the point with them.

People tend to fantasize a lot of space but there is some cold hard realities to keep in mind.

First one, there isn't much we can reach and what we do can reach isn't all that interesting (Moon and Mars). Secondly, it's ridiculously expensive and still kinda risky. It takes years to reach Mars. Years. And the possibility to not even make it is real.

Why do you think no one has yet set a foot on Mars? Cause it's a mess to even get there and in the end for what? A more interesting target would be the moons of Jupiter or/and Saturn but yeah, the distance. Imagine, you send a team on Mars (3 years at least) there they break an important piece of equipment they need for whatever they are doing there. What now? Send a new mission from Earth (3 years and billions of dollars) to relive them? Have them come back (3 years) and go again? (3 years and some more money)

That's a logistic nightmare. And once again, for what exactly? A lot maybe. Or nothing at all. That's a huge bet. And a lot of resources to invest in a project who have so many chances to fail it's ridiculous.

Since Australia claims the majority of Antactica, we'd likely have to involve them.

Re: Mars. Establishing a base ther would be dificult. The martian soil contains a cocktail of poisonous substances that are extremely hazardous to humans.

I'm of the opinion that Space Force is likely to be another Star Wars program cooked up to profit the military industrial complex, though who actually controls thespace above our country should be a legitimate military concern. Eventually we will need to have something in place.
