Since Australia claims the majority of Antactica, we'd likely have to involve them.

Re: Mars. Establishing a base ther would be dificult. The martian soil contains a cocktail of poisonous substances that are extremely hazardous to humans.

I'm of the opinion that Space Force is likely to be another Star Wars program cooked up to profit the military industrial complex, though who actually controls thespace above our country should be a legitimate military concern. Eventually we will need to have something in place.

There was definitely graft, but central goal of the SDI program was to frighten the USSR into throwing a bunch of resources at countering a fictitious weapon system. Some even credit SDI with accelerating the Soviet Union's collapse.

I doubt The Space Force has anything like as well thought out a strategy behind it as SDI did. What thinking has gone into it is a lot less likely to be about sending Space Marines to occupy Mars than about placing orbital weapon systems and targeting other orbital weapon systems. A decent sized ball of steel dropped from orbit makes almost as nasty a mess as a low-yield nuke, minus rending the target uninhabitable for millennia.
