I think Orlando is another nostalgia guy who manages to make old concepts work in the modern day.

True! Though I think he's a similar case to Jimenez where he isn't tied to a specific era. You had bits of everything in his run, from Marston to Perez to Gail Simone.

I yearn for a Phil Jimenez Black Label series, where he just has full control to go on a nostalgia kick for Marston and Perez. He's the only one that has come close to effectively merging the two eras.

Rucka and Simone obviously lean heavily towards Perez, but also a bit of the Pre-Crisis Bronze age. The villains they chose to revamp were Dr. Cyber and Astarte respectively. Cheetah was a mix of Barbara, Priscilla and Deborah, etc

I see Diana as championing more diversity in the Justice League.

She’d definitely want more BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and other marginalized people on the team to better support people and do the work they do in the galaxy.

Thing is understanding Diana requires a degree of nuance that seems beyond a lot of writers. Let's recall Waid was the guy who said (in Kingdom Come and later his JLA run) that being a warrior who wants peace is a "paradox."

I imagine there are also a lot of writers who actively reserve their A-material for the characters they actually like...who rarely is Wonder Woman. But rather than own up to that, they'll just blame her and say she's too difficult.

But writers not understanding Diana or any character wouldn't even be a problem. All creators have their strengths and preferences and there's nothing wrong with that. The problem is how many of them take the "I must use every crayon in the box" approach to the DC universe and therefore feel obligated to include her or leave a mark on her.

We see this with the guys who don't just want to write a certain corner of DC or focus on their characters of choice, but want to forge their own timeline and official history and vision of what they believe the DC universe as a whole should be.

Geoff Johns wants to create another history of the JSA...why does Diana have to get dragged in? Hell, Johns's entire career.
Mark Waid's writing a Superman/Batman book...why did Diana have to show up for a page just to get turned into mud?
Max 'ew' Landis's awful Kryptonian Epic he wants to make...why is Wonder Woman even involved? Or anyone other than Superman for that matter?
Greg Weisman's Young Justice...those White Knight books...Tom Taylor....

I'd be less offended by writers claiming Diana's hard to write if they just stayed in their damn lane. And I kinda wish the guys who don't realize how bad they are at writing her would wake the hell up.

He’s hit or miss for me. I’m loving Scarlet Witch right now which is very much about touching on Wanda’s history, but I thought his Marauders which was also big on continuity porn sucked. He struggles with recognizing when it’s better to just leave some stuff in the past imo.

    The god suck.

They're tedious, boring, inconsistent (even by Wonder Woman standards), and they're the worst part of any story they're latched onto. Killing them off was the best decision the movies made.

I always said this the gods are boring if you're going to do anything godly you gotta go hard. Shazam better bring it with the goddesses & Diana.

Oh I definitely agree with that in most cases

I'd argue they're badly used and not a bad idea.

The only times I ever really cared for the gods were in stories I'm pretty sure most people here hate lol
Keep in mind that you have about as much chance of changing my mind as I do of changing yours.

Was it just me, or did Astarte and the Citizenry kind of hearken back to the Sangtee from Messner-Loebs run?

I dunno. I have always enjoyed studying them in real life and was particularly excited by Rucka really going in on their evolution pulling directly from the myths and removing the gender bias. That was really exciting stuff ripe with so much potential.

The gods should definitely be used more sparingly than they currently are. Like, when one of them shows up, it should be a HUGE deal. But lately we've just been getting so much of them that it really makes it hard to take them seriously.

It doesn't help that we get conflicting depictions throughout every WW story. Is Hera a relatable heroine or is she a scheming Evil Queen? Is Ares still a champion of love or has he returned to his thirst for war? Don't even get me started on Aphrodite.

They need to just shelve the gods for a while because clearly beyond the inconsistent portrayals, they only really have them appear just to kill them off and act like it's a huge deal when really, it's just another month in the WW comics and we know they'll be back in a few issues.
