A middle chapter of Red Son in between the time gap featuring Barry (sent as reconnaissance to see what happened to Hal), Oliver (who gets trapped on the island somehow and considers defecting), Aquaman, and J'onn, who both ultimately decide to stay out of the conflict.

A post-apocalyptic world where Aquaman is the only hero left, the surface world scorched by Apokolips. Atlantis is no longer inhabitable and he has to lead what remains of the underwater tribes to a safe home while a dooming mystical prophecy looms.

Another post-apocalyptic world in which only the strongest superheroes and a few local humans have survived, travelling the world trying to reconnect and repopulate the world. In both of these stories (more fleshed out in the latter) the new generation of humans are ignorant and treat stories of superheroes as religious myths. Superman is somewhat depowered and is tormented by hearing cries for a savior and not being able to help. Batman also survives and advises him the whole time in secret, until in the end we realize Superman was hallucinating him the whole time.

Superman in Rome (solicited in the Superman forum). Batman is a barbarian, Lex is a Rasputin-like character in the ear of the emperor. Superman is a local hero considered blessed by the gods though he lives among men as a scholar, builder, all around help. He's reluctant to join military campaigns and always questions his divinity. Most of the rest of the League exists but as civilians in their normal occupations. Wonder Woman confirms he's not a god and the revelation is freeing as he flies off searching the stars after foiling whatever plot conspires to harm the people.

A future in which the super-villains have won and divided the planet into territories. Black Adam controls Khandaq and the surrounding Middle East, Sinestro the US, Grodd parts of Africa, Manta Atlantis, Thawne the twin cities setting up a museum for himself (the Rogues lay low), Cheetah and Ares Themyscira, the various kingpins control Gotham, Bane the Caribbean, and the rest of the world divided up among other Society members. All answer to Darkseid and each has their own agenda for furthering their power. Luthor is an underground rebel leader, almost heroic in his actions to liberate humanity, but still brutally oppresses anyone praising or wearing the symbol of a now extinct superhero. Jon Kent finds himself among his ranks as a capture, somewhat depowered, and tries to convince Luthor to let those sympathetic to the fallen heroes collaborate. Perhaps Damian is the new head of the LoA.

The Rogues go on one last heist, their biggest yet, before riding off into the sunset. Mirror Master suffers from a wrong turn in the mirror dimensions and comes out very spacey, seeing everyone's "true reflection" and sending cryptic messages about their core characters that haunt them the whole way. Cold ultimately gets foiled but after finding some peace in relation to his family past and sister's death. Prison inmates eventually kill him for all he's done to the community. Kind of like a Carlito's Way theme going on; trying to "get out" and not being able to.

Also not an elseworlds, but I really want to write Vandal Savage through history participating in historical events as a warmonger and meeting timeless characters in historical contexts.

I'm already writing one where someone on the Kryptonian science council actually believes Jor-El and comes to Earth too. It covers his life on Earth while Kal grows up. He monitors him from time to time (even working on the Kent farm for a time) and me meets different DC characters like Abin Sur and Martian Manhunter before they become super heroes. He even helps investigate the Wayne murders. The story ends when Clark debuts as Superman.

Another one was where Superman's ship crash lands on Earth thousands of years ago and he is raised by a tribe of cavemen. Where Luthor is an evil king who invented things like the wheel and cities and irrigation.

    The Justice Titans

A conspiracy somewhat similar to Justice 's plot allows The Legion of Doom to eradicate The JL, Supergirl, most of The Doom Patrol, and the Marvels. The Teen Titans, plus Batgirl, Robotman and Elastigirl all go into hiding , which does not worry the victorious Legion in the least.

Black Adam, Black Manta, Grodd, Luthor and Sinestro cooperate one last time to kill Brainiac, then lacking.a common enemy, fall into a gang war against each other, with different members of the Legion (plus others) in each of their corners. What none of them realize is the gang war is being stoked and manipulated by The Teen Titans, under Robin's leadership.

The kids got ruthlessly angry after their mentors' murders, and using the late Batman's fortune, they're moving subtly. They're enabling some faction victories and sabotaging others, often doing both to the same faction at different times, steadily winnowing The Legion's ranks. When all sides are sufficiently weakened, The Titans strike, assassinating the last of The Legion.

The job done, the victorious Titans decide it's not enough. Relabling themselves The Justice Titans, they go on the hunt for every super criminal left loose in the world.

Will never work/happen, deaths mean nothing if they don't happen in continuity, killing of characters is done as stunts to boost a title's or issue's sales, and writers are going to write deaths of underused and less popular characters as long as there is some modicum of freedom and the urge/need to push some huge as event.

Clever answer? Gotta trim the fat somehow!

An ongoing Elseworlds line could still have some weight if the project had enough attention and talent behind it. In fact I bet it would start outselling many of the "real" books, and the deaths don't have to feel cheap if they're done in memorable stories.

An alternate Justice team I had some ideas about, like a Justice Society/League for the Dark Age

    Justice Alliance of America:
Gold Flamer - Rocket scientist, Scotty Mullan, who develops super powers of cosmic fire after solving an equation on a meteor.

Flash - Freddy Huxtable a teenager from a ghetto in Gotham City who gains super speed after being toss onto train tracks stepping on a chemical covered third rail and trying to outrun the train.

Super Manhunter - Kryptonian scout Kara Zor-Elle is sent by Brainiac (he saved Krypton and uses it as his based) to investigate Earth but after meeting magical beings she persuades Brainiac to not take over Earth and decides to learn more about Earth, emotions. and magic.

Crimson Arrow - A communist who immigrants to America to protest capitalism and becomes a public funded vigilante .

Green Lantern - American soldier Mace Gardner becomes a Green Lantern after surviving an ambush from terrorist and uses his power to start his war on crime.

Bloodkiss - A vampire princess who immigrants to America and fights criminals while working at a brothel.

Motorfist - A college student who builds a robotic suit of armor and downloads fighting styles from video games to help him fight crime.

Comics deaths are fake and everybody knows it, so they don't happen in continuity. Events aren't built around "deaths" any more because readers laugh at them.

Something else that should happen in an Elseworld title are fake "marriages." DC won't be able to pull that stunt again either.

An ongoing Brave & the Bold and Elseworlds book would be a great proving ground for new writers and a place for random stories that they want to do. Why is this not a thing? I see absolutely no downside.

When someone proposes that a failed idea be tried again -- as often happens here -- the burden is on him to show why it would work now.

DC published an ongoing of The Brave and the Bold from 2007-2010. It didn't sell. Why would it sell this time?

Why not? I have no "burden" to prove anything because I'm not working for DC.

As a fan I am stating what I would buy. A book that focuses on team ups and one off stories is something I want to read. As for my statement about no downsides was in reference to the Elseworld idea.

    Supermanhunter

In route between bounty-hunting jobs, a band of Manhunters encounters the Kryptonian vessel carrying Kal-el during its journey to Earth. Aware that Earth hosts a Manhunter cell, the androids take the rocket to the Grand Master of Earth, who raises its passenger as a member of The Manhunter Order, under the name of Simon Kirby.

On completing his training, The Manhunters send Kirby to Metropolis, where he secures work as a reporter, while secretly becoming famed and feared vigilante under in the guise of Manhunter. Only Lois Lane's influence prevents Manhunter from killing Abin Sur when he investigates. The androids' reaction to this mercy opens Kirby's eyes to the true nature of his Order; he declares the androids "failed machines," and himself "the last true Manhunter," before driving the androids from the Earth. He also drives Abin Sur away, and declares the planet off limits to The Guardians of Oa, or any other alien intruder, as well as any of their agents. To assist him guarding the planet, with the cooperation of The UN, he secures the aid of The King of Atlantis, and The Queen of The Amazons, who join him in recruiting a few other superbeings to form The Manhunter League.

Agreed on all those points, but Elseworlds will never be a means to prevent writers from killing off characters in next summer's huge blockbuster in continuity event. Death can still mean a lot to the story in an elseworld, but death means nothing to the sales numbers unless in continuity. But yes, an ongoing elseworlds title could outsell the main titles easily. The Dark Knight Returns has never been in continuity, and it is probably the best selling Batman story ever. There's Gotham by Gaslight, the vampire story, the one where Batman fights the predators, and the recent White Knight for famous Batman stories never in continuity. Superman has Red Son and All Star Superman.
