Well, editors do have to sometimes tell writers "NO!" when the writers want to do something that may be great for their story but would not be good for the future direction of the characters or the rest of the DC universe. Since writers don't own most of the properties they write for in the DC universe, there are some limitations.

Of course but I mean things like editorial mandates that force writers into doing stories or not doing stories they want to do. Doing a story where Batman goes around killing people should be told no. Deciding that *insert character* should die and then tell the writers to make it happen is a bone headed move that forces writers to shift gears and bend to make it happen.

I'm not in the writers room so I have no idea what stories are pitched but I think most people at DC aren't trying to make stories that would break the sandbox or toys for the other writers. Boundaries are set for a reason. The problems I have are the amount of horror stories I hear about DC's editorial teams shutting down or twisting things that would make for good stories that won't hurt things for everyone else.

Honestly that is probably a good thing. Modern Waid is just not the same guy he was in his prime. His books these days tend to be preechy and go over the top trying to make some social point that they are just no fun to read. It started to show in his 2nd Legion run, but really shows in his latter work. He just has lost the ability to have fun with comics, and I would hate to see that attitude guiding a whole company.

While Waid has become more preachy, I think he would make a great higher up. He loves and respects what has come before and knows his characterizations.
