Man, I never thought I would see a spy franchise I like more than Bond but MI has surpassed it. Bond needs to have an injection of change.
Skyfall was the first Bond film to gross over a billion and is the third highest grossing adjusted for inflation after Goldfinger and Thunderball which is considered the peak of Bond Mania and the golden years of the franchise. Casino Royale and Spectre (2 of the last 4 films) were easily among the best received films in the series. Even Spectre which was considered lesser than those two still made 880 million which is more than any of the Mission Impossible films.
MI made two good films back to back. They are basically in their Fast and the Furious phase where they kind got it all clicking (didn't really think much of the first 3).
Either they shouldn't be compared. They are not nearly the same type film in any respects. The Bond series knows what it wants to do btw. They deconstructed Bond in the first two to break him in Casino and have him find some direction in Qunatum. Then the last two films were taking this more fleshed out Bond and slowly introducing the more fantastical elements. With Skyfall bringing in a more bombastic and elaborate villain and the old pieces of a more traditonal M, Q and Moneypenny and SPECTRE further pushed it by bringing back the primary villains of the series. They've stripped him down and now are building it back up.
Apparentally the short list for replacements are:
Yann Demange, who was actually rumored a few months ago before the Boyle announcement.
David Mackenzie
and Edgar Wright. Kind of curious how his style would work with a Bond film.

Cary Joji Fukunaga (True Detective) will replace Boyle as director , movie is pencilled in for a February 14th 2020 release date

That's an interesting release date. Pretty much all the Brosnan and Craigs have been released in November/December. The Bond films during the Moore and Dalton years were pretty much Spring/summer releases, but that didn't help Licence to Kill during 1989, which was a hugely competitive summer, not only with new stuff like Batman, Honey I shrunk the Kids etc but big sequels like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ghostbusters 2, Lethal Weapon 2, Star Trek V etc.

Also interesting given the Elba hype from a few weeks back, Fukunaga directed Beasts of No Nation.
He's also I think the very first Asian American Bond director-every other director was either British (most), New Zealand (Capmbell and Tamahori), German (Marc Foster). Spottiswoode (Tomorrow Never Dies) was born in Canada but mostly grew up in Britain.
Although Irvin Kershner kind of counts.

Interesting choice for a replacement given that Boyle dropped out over a creative conflict, since Fukunaga isn't a director who is shy about leaving projects over creative differences.
Wonder how much control he'll be getting.
Unfortunately the film has been delayed again to an April 2020 release date. I think this makes it the first Spring Bond film since "View To A Kill" I think. Also shares a release date from "With Russia With Love".

Disappointing that's it's been delayed again but a two month delay isnt that major in the grand scope. I would rather they take time to develop the movie rather then rush it to meet a release date. I am surprised we havent had any casting news besides returning cast members at this stage though. Awesome connection with FRWL regarding the new release date.
Apparently the script is being "overhauled" yet again
