It's often been stated that the films have soft-rebooted over time; for instance pretty much the only constant in the first 19 films was Desmond's Q (and even he wasn't in every film, since he was recast from Dr.No and didn't show up in Live and Let Die for some reason). Still, the first 20 films are generally considered to be in the same rough continuity, although if you assume Bond is roughly 30 in Dr.No then he's about 70 in Die Another Day.

It kind of worked with Connery going over to Moore since they were roughly the same age although they didn't look much alike, but with Dalton that pretty much went out the window. Ditto with Dalton's Moneypenny, who went from the nearly 60-year old Lois Maxwell to 25 year old Caroline Bliss.

Even the Craig films arguably didn't totally reboot things, as they kept Judi Dench's M, although her role in Bond's backstory is definetly changed; in GOLDENEYE it was implied she was brand new and considered Bond the relic; where in Casino Royale that's kind of flipped (although Bond being obselete is brought back up again in Skyfall).

Also it's a bit unclear how Bond's personal Aston Martin in Skyfall somehow had the Goldfinger tech....although presumably he got it modified off-screen or during a "Craigverse" version of Goldfinger.

Looks like the "Shatterhand" title rumors are starting to show up again, at least as a "working title".

"Shatterhand" is the alias Blofeld uses in the novel version of "You Only Live Twice", which in the book chronology, comes after OHMSS. (YOLT's movie version pretty much has the book's Japanese setting and Blofeld as the villain, but Blofeld's plot is totally different; likewise, it ends with Bond's assumed death instead of beginning with it; and instead of a fake-out like in the film, it leaves him amnesiac for a time and living with Kissy for a while (There's a bit of "Skyfall" inspiration here I think. It's also revealed that Kissy is pregnant(!)

It would also fit pretty well with the titles of the last two films, sort of a Craig "S" trilogy.

There are recent rumors that Boyle might've intended to kill off Craig's Bond, which would pretty much wipe the slate clean for another reboot.

Of course the films have "killed" Bond before a few times-You Only Live Twice (faked) Diamonds Are Forever (Swapped IDs) and Skyfall (Presumed)...and Fleming actually intended for the end of the novel version of From Russia With Love to be Bond's death (He actually *does* get stabbed with the shoe in the book) only to have him recover in Dr.No....and Bond was presumed dead Skyfall-style in the book version of You Only Live Twice (He also had amnesia).

I'm not opposed to them killing off Bond in a film depending on how its handled. Wolverines death in Logan I felt was a great send off to the character and if they did something similar with Bond I would be fine with it. That said, I dont really want another reboot so so since Casino Royale was only a few films ago. And it is interesting to think what the Bond franchise would be like had Fleming gone through with killing off Bond at the end of From Russia with Love.

Funny thing is, the dialogue in Doctor No where M is giving M the walther because his last gun (The beretta) jammed and he wound up in hospital is, in the context of the novel, a reference to his near-death in From Russia With Love.

Of course the movies reverse the order, so the incident in the movie version of Dr.No is some unseen mission, and in the movie version of FWRL Bond has Tatania present (She's elsewhere in the novel getting debriefed or something) to help him deal with Klebb.

I think it's sort of a case of them sticking close to the novel despite possible continuity hiccups down the road (NO is fairly close although No's death is very different, the Jamacia assignment is seen by M as an easy mission for Bond after his near-death since initially it deals with just the missing agent who M figured just went AWOL before Bond stumbles on the larger conspiracy, and of course SPECTRE and Felix were not in the book) OHMSS did this too with Bond and Blofeld not recognizing each other right away, like in the book, since they hadn't met at that moment.

As for reboot, it's sort of been stated that the older films have sort of a soft continuity, with really only Ms and of course Q linking them all together, with occasional nods to past movies such as the reappearence of a gadget (The scene in OHMSS in Bond's office where he inspects stuff from his earlier missions, also the opening montage, Die Another Day's gadget archive) or references to Bond's wife.

There is of course, the "codename" fan theory, that James Bond is in fact a code-name given to multiple agents, although that kind of falls apart with the Tracy stuff.

I've never really cared for the codename theory. I think it's an interesting fan theory but I would hate if they brought that into the movies, like they were considering with Die Another Day. Like you said, it doesn't really work plus it leads to various other questions, such as is Felix also a codename since several different actors have played the character as well.

    The codename theory never worked.

Even in this current continuity we saw the grave of Bond's parents.

In the old continuity.... well it's kind of hard to get by Lazenby remembering all of Connery's adventures, Lazenbay's wife Tracy dying and then Moore visiting her grave and Dalton referencing it. Moore hanging out with Quirrel Jr. They are all friends with Felix Leiter.

The codename theory is stupid and horrible.

Pretty creepy looking character, either a henchman or Blofeld covering up his scars with a mask maybe? Also there's a young girl there being chased. Bit of a theory: Maybe the girl is Bond and Swann's daughter, and both getting killed sets has Bond pretty much come out of retirement for revenge? A Bit of OHMSS/LICENSE TO KILL/THE PUNISHER kind of thing?

Bond actually has a son he's not aware of in the Fleming novel canon, with Kissy.

Although there's also a possibility that this is Madeline herself, in flashback. Kind of fits with the whole snowy European look of the middle part of SPECTRE as well.

I'm guessing it's a henchman in the photos. I imagine if it was Blofeld, we would have heard about Waltz being in the movie by now.

While I feel like they will end up taking this movie down a similar path as OHMSS, I would prefer they let Swann live through this movie. I feel it would be more original than having another Bond girl killed. It would make since if this was a flashback to when Swann was a kid and someone came after her. Would make sense to have White hide his connection to her over the years if something occurred when she was a kid. I was also thinking that the kid could be someone connected to M. Might be a reason for Bond to come out of retirement if M asks him for help.

Blofeld changed his face in both the novels and the movies a few times, so it doesn't necesarilly have to be Waltz.

Yeah, the Craig films haven't been easy on the Bond girls-even compared to previous Bond eras. Both Solange and Vesper die in CR (Of course, Vesper dying was a major part of the novel) and it's implied that Le Chiffre's moll was presumabely killed by White as well, Fields is killed in QOS, Severine and you can also sort of count M in Skyfall...SPECTRE is the only one where none of the Bond girls die, unless Blofeld got to Lucia before Felix did.

Bond takes out the men sent to kill her and then contacts Felix offscreen to take her to safe place. Unless SPECTRE got to her again before Felix did, she's ok.

Thought I'd bring this back up. There was an interview with Boyle recently saying his version of the film would have been set in Russia, and that Bond and Swann having a child and Bond dying was actually in his version of the movie as well.
