Default Favorite/ best recent comic book writers and artists?

I haven't been reading as many comic books as I used to, so I'm curious if I've missed out on any new talent.

I've been thinking I should check out the work by some new writers and artists. One way to think about "new" is that they would not be reasonable choices for CBR's list of Top 100 writers and artists in 2018, because their resumes would be too obscure or just too small. Their biggest work is still ahead of them.

    https://www.cbr.com/comic-book-write...s-master-list/

There are plenty of writers and artists who have been in the business for a while who have done great work in the last few years (IE- Hickman, Jason Aaron, Dan Slott, Mike Allred, Yanick Paquette, etc.), but I'm interested in new faces.

So what writers and artists should I check out?

I've enjoyed what I've read of Tom Taylor, and Chip Zdarsky and have heard good stuff about Mark Russell, Jed Mackay and David F Walker.

I know less about new artists, although a big part of that may be that they're less prolific.

Ryan North is proving with Secret Invasion and Fantastic Four that he can do more than quirky Squirrel Girls.

I have to say I am surprised you like Mark Russel. His comics often ridicule and criticize everything your political team stands for.

A couple I have really enjoyed...

James Tynion's creator-owned stuff like The Woods, Something is Killing the Children, Wynd, Department of Truth and others. I wasn't keen on his work-for-hire stuff, but I really dig his creator-owned stuff.

Pornsak Pichetshote, especially the Good Asian.

    Does Japanese manga count?

If it is about comics, I recommend Jason Aaron's Avengers book. But it appears you already have heard of him. You mentioned him already.

I also enjoyed Chip Zdarsky's take on Daredevil comic book.

Manga counts. I don't know much about new talent, beyond Demon Slayer being absurdly popular.

I do plan to check out Jason Aaron's Avengers (and his Conan), although he's been around for a bit. His Thor relaunch was more than a decade ago, and before that he had developed a reputation as perhaps the best Wolverine writer, in addition to the Vertigo mini-series The Other Side, and the regular series Scalped.

To be clear, all I said was that I've heard good things, not that I've read much of his work. That said, I did get the idea for the thread listening to an interview he did with Word Balloon. I'm getting Matt Fraction circa 2007 vibes, which is promising.

I don't agree with Matt Fraction on politics either, but so? I'm not looking for affirmation of my political views in a comic book. That's an approach that leads to compromising on quality, which is something I want to discourage as much as possible. Because I like good art.

I fell in love with Ram V's writing, first, in These Savage Shores and, more recently, with the heart-wrenching The Many Deaths of Laila Starr. I fully recommend both stories, which are different in tone and genre, but top quality. Same goes for the art, a visual feast

That said, there is some solid older work out there.

Just a bit of recent rise in profile.

Since artists are allowed, my choices would be...

    Peach Momoko

    Otto Schmidt

    Dan Mora

    Thanks for the recommendations.

I liked the art on The Wild Storm the one time I read it.

I'll have to check out Schmidt, Momoko and Mora.

I've heard good things about Ram V's Swamp Thing, but I'll add the other stuff to my "to read" list.

I have a lot of my favorite new manga lately on my platter. Sadly I do not know any of these suit your tastes, since most of my fanorite new mangas are ecchi, smut or what you'd consider vulgar.

    Dr. Stone
Welcome to the Ballroom (whose author's name is Takeuchi Tomo)
YJK no Ijou na Aijou (translated as YJK Strange Affection)

    Ram V
Chip Zdarksy (he isn’t really knew though but he’s just breaking out big now)
    Ryan North (so far)

However, as a book, Something is killing the Children is the best out there.

Ram V is great, I doubt he'll ever make it to being an Industry Icon, but I hope he at least gets Cult Status.
James Tynion should be an industry Icon, especially in the indie scene. Nice House on the Lake is probably the best comic I've read in the last few years.
Al Ewing seems to have made it big with Immortal Hulk, but has sadly been unable to keep a stable book since, which is a shame as his Guardians was great. Even going back to his early work with Mighty Avengers, there's a lot to like about his stuff.
Donny Cates, while some think of him as hit and miss, I've really enjoyed his work. Venom, Silver Surfer Black and Cosmic Ghost Rider were honestly great, some of the best things to come out from Marvel at the time. I'm hoping that he is doing good nowadays as I've heard he is going through some issues. Don't want to comment on such things, but I wish things turn out the best for him.
Cantwell did a long Iron Man arc which really stuck the landing. It started off weird, but once I got what he was doing, I ended up loving it.

    For art;
Peach Momoko is my favourite variant artist. I've managed to get People into her work and have gifted folks Demon Days just because I think it's that good. An excellent artist.
Ryan Stegmen channels the energy of folks like Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo. If you like the style of the 90's but with a modern twist, he is your guy.
Rod Reis basically is New Mutants these days. The work he did with Vita Ayala (whom I would put in the writer's section if only I've read more of their work) is beyond amazing. I'm really glad I stuck with the book because it became one of my favourite X titles.

Ryan North and Mark Russell may be my two favorite writers producing current work. North's Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is a wonderful FUN look at superheroing and is among the greatest runs Marvel has ever produced (IMHO anyway). Mark Russell's recently concluded Superman Space Age is getting some great compliments on these forums and may be a story that can be mentioned in the same breath as All-Star Superman.

The books mentioned don't fit into continuity (USG, maybe, if you lean far to one direction and squint) but get to the characters and settings wonderfully.

I forgot to recommend a few more of the new/recent mangas.

How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? ( Danberu Nan-Kiro Moteru?)
Handyman Saitō in Another World (Benriya Saitou-san, Isekai ni Iku)
Isekai Nonbiri Nouka (Farming Life in Another World)

I have enjoyed these three manga series more than the previous ones I suggested.
