Wouldn't surprise me if the writer did have a claim to ownership. No TPB. There has to be a reason for that.

I don't think there is a conspiracy. This is not a book anyone is clamouring for.

However, the legal case of who exactly owns characters like this could potentially cause major ripples in the industry. There is no way a court of law would rule that a book like this was work for hire, and that would have a knock-on effect. We will probably never see this on Marvel Unlimited unless Marvel strike a deal.

It would depend on the contract of course. Books like Stray Toasters have ended up outside of Marvel, because the Epic contract was more specific, but this would probably have been a standard contract and that is an area where the industry treads very carefully. Especially after the Gaiman case over Angela derivatives. It is now clear the courts do not see these things the same way as the editors used to.

I only read the first issue when it came out, but it was pretty much a story about young people trying to start a rock band. There were no super heroes.

True, but there wasn't even a trade at the time, 28 years ago. That just seems weird to me.

If the series sales were terrible enough, maybe they never will based on that alone.

Trades were not anywhere near as common then. Not everything was collected.

It is interesting how used to trades people have become. Just something random, but the first trade for Spawn did not come out until 3 years after #1 was released.

Yeah trades were harder to get then. A lot of comics never got them. That's what reprint books like marvel tales and marvel superheroes were for.
