I was checking out the New Marvel Comics Release Calendar and saw that Marvel is going to release 15 new comics this week.
Then I casually checked the Show Variants box.
It jumped up to 53.
53!
Does that seem a little out of control?

Seems like Standard Operating Procedure for Marvel.
Namor the Sub-Mariner, Marvel's oldest character, will have been published for 85 years in 2024. So where's my GOOD Namor anniversary ongoing, Marvel?

Your example doesn't actually sound that bad to be honest. A book having one or two variants isn't the end of the world. Sure, there's an element of collecting or market speculation with the more rare variants. But some people just like being able to choose a cover they prefer when given options. Things can go overboard sometimes of course, but let me guess; a few of those titles don't have any variants, several only have one or two, and there's one or two issues with 4+ variants.
Continuity, even in a "shared" comics universe is often insignificant if not largely detrimental to the quality of a comic.

It's completely excessive and non-sensical to me, but there's clearly a market for them so of course Marvel will keep doing them. What I don't understand is paying 10x (or more!) cover price for a book that's probably going to sit bagged and boarded in a box somewhere for years to come.
