Moss wasn’t going to last as long. Rice had freakish longevity. Also it’s not for lack of trying. Moss was one of the two most important players on a 15-1 Vikings team and 16-0 Patriots team.

People also take Moss’ quote about trying out of context. The worst thing you can probably say about Moss was that he needed the ball constantly or got unhappy

Sure it did help...its how many players can step right in and be successful. Of course we have to remember Rice's draft stock wasn't high then. In fact in 1985 his stock fell due to a bad 40 time. Which Walsh found silly , he was fast where it mattered as he later joked. There was 2 WR's selected above Rice due to that (Al Toon and Eddie Brown).

But like a Tom Brady ; Jerry Rice saw this and used this to motivate himself . Brady was asked why he keeps wanting to play and win Super Bowls. He looked at someone and said...'Because I was selected 199th in that draft." Rice ran THE HILL for years and its said he'd tire younger people out. I believe even Terrell Owens would ask why Rice even in the 1990's after all his success and being considered the Greatest WR was still pushing himself so hard and working out like a maniac to do it. They didn't have the drive Jerry Rice had.

And that was what made Rice and Brady the greatest at their positions. Guys didn't have that drive to keep pushing harder because they wanted it. Moss , Owens they didn't have that other drive after it. And in both cases both men had the same great organizations that drafted and all . Moss had 2 of them (Vikings and Patriots....)_

Makes me wonder what Larry Fitzgerald's numbers would have been if he had been on a team with a Brady or a Brees (or even a Big Ben).

I imagine, had it been in his prime, he would have been able to take a shot at Moss and Rice.

Fun fact: He almost went to the Patriots 3 times during his career. NE offered a trade to AZ in May 2018, but Larry said no. It almost happened in 2013, like he was getting ready to pack his locker up. And they tried again in 2014.

Come on, Jerry Rice would say that about anyone in the whole world. He'd probably even say it about himself - if he hadn't broken every record like he did. Rice was just a very intense and hard-working individual who could not understand why others weren't as intense. He reminds me of guys like Rickey Henderson or Tom Brady.

Oh Browns, never stop being Browns, such unselfish giving of entertainment.

On Thursday, ESPN's Seth Wickersham unveiled an up close look at the turbulence that has surrounded the Cleveland Browns for the past six years.

•When Haslam fired head coach Hue Jackson this past October, Jackson told Haslam and general manager John Dorsey to "Get the f--- out of my office."

•In an effort to monitor what fans were saying about the team amid Farmer's suspension for texting coaches on the sideline, team employees broadcast social media searches onto a giant wall at the team facility. One such search of a particular hashtag resulted in "an array of porn" being broadcast on the wall for at least 20 minutes until a tech employee killed the feed.

•"We just don't know what we are doing," Haslam's wife and Browns co-owner Dee Haslam reportedly told employees. "If we'd known how hard it would be, we never would have bought the team." Through a team spokesperson, Dee Haslam denied such statement.

While the Browns have won more games ON the field, the organization remains very much a dumpster fire OFF the field.

As I posted Rice was in his 30's and running the hill , beating out people years younger . Scary fact ...Rice would have ended up starting that 21st season with Denver. Mike Shanahan said as much when he brought up that Rice had beaten out the 2 young players half his age. Shanahan however claimed he couldn't start a 41 year old WR over the young 20+ year old WR's he had and told Rice this. That he had beaten them out but he just couldn't let him start due to how it would appear. Plus he couldn't logically see Rice wanting to be a 3rd/4th string WR and sit on a bench being the greatest.

Rice saw guys with way more talent and gifts he never had and it did irk him. Because how could they not want it as bad as him ?

ESPN needs to do a 30 for 30 special on the Cleveland Browns and all the insane losing and crazy behind the scenes stories.

Eh, that line of logic might sound appealing but doesn't hold up if you look at the big picture. There are plenty of guys drafted in the later rounds who have a chip on their shoulders and are extremely driven to succeed and prove all the doubters wrong, it's just that most of them aren't good enough and we never hear their stories.

Yeah, I'm also skipping THE BIG GAME which I have ZERO interest in. I have no doubt I can find something else to watch next Sunday.

Because you said it yourself...they are never good enough. Here we had all-pro and someone who by the 1990's was already the GREATEST WR to ever play and he was never gonna accept less of himself. While others who did have talent like an Owens , Moss etc ....they were great WR's. But Jerry Rice wanted it more. Some players have that in them. Some don't.

Rice was intense and talented. And probably a little too intense. There is a point where you cross the line from being intense to being obsessed.

    Story about Jerry Rice:

"In team workouts he was famous for his hustle; while many receivers would trot back to the quarterback after catching a pass, Rice would sprint to the end zone after each reception. He would typically continue practicing long after the rest of the team had gone home. Most remarkable were his six-days-a-week off-season workouts, which he conducted entirely on his own. Mornings were devoted to cardiovascular work, running a hilly five-mile trail; he would reportedly run ten forty-meter wind sprints up the steepest part. In the afternoons he did equally strenuous weight training. These workouts became legendary as the most demanding in the league, and other players would sometimes join Rice just to see what it was like. Some of them got sick before the day was over."
-Excerpt from the book Talent is Overrated, by Geoff Colvin

Not that obsession is necessarily bad. Its a great motivator! And its really a matter of how you handle your other priorities (family, friends, etc.) that determines the place of your particular obsession in your life.

Saints’ Benjamin Watson blasts Roger Goodell in open letter

New Orleans Saints tight end Benjamin Watson has played his final NFL game. The veteran tight end’s career concluded when his team lost in controversial fashion to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game.

Days removed from the controversy in New Orleans, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has yet to speak out. His silence tells us a story of a man that refuses to own up to the imperfection of the league he runs.

In talking about this and Goodell’s responsibility, Watson wrote a scathing open letter to the commissioner.

“Your continued silence on this matter is unbecoming of the position you hold, detrimental to the integrity of the game and disrespectful and dismissive to football fans everywhere,” Watson wrote. “From the locker room to Park Ave, accountability is what makes our league great. Lead by example. We are waiting.”
My take: Goodell will continue to hide and not say **** in the (faint) hope the controversy will die down and disappear as the Super Bowl gets ever closer.
