This is not easy for me to do, after the first 4 (which are easy choices) but my top 10 series would go something like this (the order is interchangeable!):

    STARMAN by James Robinson
JSA (and JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA but I found his 81 issues of JSA better) by Geoff Johns
    MANHUNTER by Marc Andreyko
    FLASH by Geoff Johns
    JLA by Mark Waid
JLA by Joe Kelly (if we're inclusing minis JUSTICE LEAGUE ELITE would be a contender to)
INFINITY INC by Roy Thomas (this definitely isn't in order because that should be somewhere in the top 5!)
    GOTHAM CENTRAL by Rucka
    YOUNG JUSTICE by Peter David
WONDER WOMAN by Greg Rucka (both stints but his pre REBIRTH/New 52 stint was probably stronger).

    4- Infinity Inc.
    5- Firestorm by Gerry Conway.
    6- Sandman Mystery Theater
    7- Hawkman by Geoff Johns.
8- Green Lantern by Geoff Johns.
    9- Starman by James Robinson.
I seriously wanted to include All Star Squadron - I loved it - but there were others I liked more. Thanks for including it on your list.

    * Captain Atom by Cary Bates and Greg Weisman (although I'm not old enough to have bought it monthly)

Batman by Grant Morrison (which is really all of the varied issues he wrote)
    Wonder Woman by Brian Azzarello
Adventures of Superman by Joe Casey
Man of Steel by Mark Schultz
New Super-man by Gene Luen Yang
Green Lantern: New Guardians by Justin Jordan
    REBELS by Tony Bedard
    Action Comics by Grant Morrison
    Red Lanterns by Peter Milligan

I'm also really glad to see Power of SHAZAM listed. Between that and other work, Ordway is an all-tme favorite.

Do we have to have bought them every month at the time or can they be runs we caught up with later in trade?

No particular order, just numbered so I stop at 10.

1/ Suicide Squad by John Ostrander
    2/ Garth Ennis Hitman
    3/ Starman by James Robinson
4/ Gotham Central by Brubaker/ Rucka
    5/ Catwoman by Brubaker
6/ Hawkworld by Truman/ Ostrander (Although this was a mini by Tim T followed By John O series, think it’s reasonable to count as one run)
    7/ Supergirl by Peter David
8/ Superman Adventures by Mark Millar
9/ Swamp Thing by Alan Moore
10/ Brave and the Bold Bob Haney/ Jim Aparo

Oops..just seen Lightning Rider’s post...didn’t see requirement to have bought every month, rather than get sometime later. That knocks all my choices out...I always buy in “arrears”.

So, limiting myself to ongoing series, and thinking hard about "runs I would gladly go back and re-read in full, would that I had the time"...

    Sandman/Gaiman
    Doom Patrol/Morrison
    Animal Man/Morrison
    Batman/Morrison
    JLA/Morrison/Waid
    GL Mosaic/Jones (combo breaker!)
    Starman/Robinson
    Swamp Thing/Moore
Legion/Levitz/Giffen/Biernbaums (it's all one piece for me, from the Great Darkness Saga up through about the middle of the 5 Year Later Legion)
    Annnnd, let's say Suicide Squad/Ostrander.

    Dang, Flash/Waid missed the cut.

It is interesting to read these lists and I suppose in such a forum that this question might be asked repeatedly over time. I recently wrote up a long webpage on the 20 best comic runs of all time. By your standard, nornal books, not special series or cross overs, I included 5 DC runs which I will list below, so these would need to start me list here:

    1) Detective Comics - Marshal Rogers, Terry Austin, Steve Englehart
    http://www.mrbrklyn.com/comics.html#rogers_detective

    2) O'Neil and Adams GL/GA

    3) Action Comics - Siegel and Shuster

    4) Superman - Gil Kane

    5) The Spectre - John Ostrander, Tom Mandrake

You can read about those selections at the links.

    For 5 more, start with

    6) Detective Comics - Kane and Finger
The original Batman was successful because the stories were outstanding and the art was anything but crude. It was cinimatic.

    7) Green Lantern Mosiac by Jones and Cully Hamner. - Jones has been locked up for child pornography, but the work is still facinating and original in the Comic Book world

Now it gets to be really tough to chose - lets go with
    8) Kane and Broome - Green Lantern

    9) Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn, and Paris Cullins's Blue Devil

    10) Perez and Wolfman Teen Titans

Now - all that being said, I did not include the latest King and Gerald Mister Miracle because I think it is a 12 issue special series. Also missing is Mark Waid’s and Weiringo's Flash, Kitson's Legion, Waid and Kitsons Supergirl Legion of Super Heroes (You'll believe you can fall in love with a girl that flys), Keith Giffen and Levitz Legion of Super-Heroes, Dan Jurgensen's Superman is very overlooked and was great... Swamp Thing - Wrightonson, O'Neil and Adams Batman and Adams Manbat..

There is no Vertigo books listed

Batman Adventures multiple volumes by Templeton and Slott
    Suicide Squad by John Ostrander
Jonah Hex by Palmiotti and Gray
    Tom Strong by Alan Moore
    Promethea by Alan Moore
Ex Machina by Bryan K Vaughn

Being a "Person of Interest" doesn't make you an interesting person.

I think my favorites have changed over time because I grew up in the 1970s and DC Comics grew up with me. So, at the time, I preferred the post-Crisis comics to the pre-Crisis ones because objectively, they are generally better written and drawn.

However, now that I'm older, I look back on my childhood with fondness rather than trying to grow out of it and leave it behind. So now, I remember how much I loved comics growing up, and now I prefer those.

So, for me, that means all comics published between 1975 and 1985 and older comics I bought during that period as back issues.

In particular, Justice League of America, Superboy and the Legion, and Superman were my favorite comics.

Have every issue of Flash since #105 (Barry's first run) and am a Flash nut.

And who doesn't love the fourth Doctor??

Wow! I am trying to collect all the Flash issues. I have quite a ways to go in Barry’s first run, but I’ve almost completed my Wally collection.
