If you look at the old run, Jean would make dotted lined shapes of tk to make things move, and she couldn't really fly completely, only hover a bit or jump. There's an issue towards the end of the old run, with the Neal Adams art, where their plane gets destroyed and they are all falling and she doesn't just levitate everyone to safety. That said, tk has evolved since then in its applications to the point where tks freely fly and do other stuff without having an 'anchor'.
Let the flames destroy all but that which is pure and true!
My explanation still stands. This is how an airplane works. In my explanation, Banshee's costume gave him the curvature of the "wings" for collision of air molecules, which his scream manages to displace. Airplanes fly because the pressure from beneath is more than the gravity from above, thus this creates resistance the "flyer" and the ground, meaning they move over this colliding air molecules and don't fall. This changes only when a variable changes, example: Banshee stops screaming or closes his arms.
LOL. Tk's anchor is just the brain.
The brain energy extends from the brain , just like Cyclops energy extends from his eyes.
So technically, she can't fly.
She can levitate up on the ground just like Kitty walking on air but flying is definitely no-no.
Flying and levitating are two different powers. Jean was portrayed correctly in the past as levitating by the dotted energy pushing on the ground.
I think past writers were confused seeing Jean fly as Dark Phoenix but that's not really Jean. These writers failed Physics.

I don't think a different interpretation of a fictional concept like telekinesis means that they don't understand physics. A lot of writers think of TK similarly to energy constructs that defy gravity that are propelled through the power of the mind, like a Green Lantern, but not necessarily an energy emanating from the brain that anchors them together.
And at this point it's a commonly accepted interpretation of that power that isn't going away.
What the heck are you talking about? Psylocke could fly
No Jean can fly. Originally she could only elevate herself but she's grown far more skilled since then. When X-Factor began, it was noted that she loss her TP, but gained a power boost to her TK to the point that she was able to fly effortlessly with a thought. Its now second nature to her
