It goes to show how good writers can be bad for certain characters.

Byrne was great on Fantastic Four, especially Sue, but sucked on the X-Men.

While Claremont practically defined the X-Men as we know them and made Storm the goddess we know and love, but was absolute trash on the FF.

Claremont wrote the FF as well? I never knew this.

Thats not quite fair as Marvel was a going through a transition when they had that exodus in the early 90s. Uncanny was being written, plotted, scripted and rewritten by multiple writers, even within the same issue and it showed. Its not like Byrne ever had an actual stint as X-men writer like he did with FF. All he had was Hidden Years which purposefully was supposed to evoke a retro feel

Even with this to regress the characters in the way he did (at least with the issue I read) it made the xmen seem like sanctimonious hypocrites. Also I wasnt feeling his portrayal of Ororo either. It just doenst seem to get really with Claremont version well, which David_Munroe mentioned would happen.

Yeah. He wrote it after during Heroes Return. He started the ball rolling for Valeria Richards coming back (his Valeria is similar to Rachel) and he turned Reed into Dr. Doom. Good shit.

which issues are you specifically referencing?

no that is directly storm related.. But Luke Cage.. Luke Cage..Season 2 a lot.. if only we could get a show like this for Storm, Bishop and the rest of the black mutants. If we ever get a black x writer maybe they will get some focus.

You make a great point. This is why we have seen her get better treatment under Coates' pin where we get development in her connection with her blackness, community, as well as her power. The best Storm we have gotten in ages IMHO.

Issue 283 was when my gagging started. When Colossus starting preaching about not killing and it went from there.

I did a double take to make sure it wasn't Claremont who was writing it and sure enough it was this Byrne writer.

Like seriously, i can't be too mad at current writers not getting these characters right because this mischaracterizations began it seemed immediately once Claremont stopped writing them.

There were some good moments, but the bad outweighed the good for me personally. And I absolutely hated the Valeria reveal.
It's not the worst FF run, but it's not one of the good ones.

I enjoyed Bishop's introduction, but other than that, it was a wash. That said, Cyke's Blue team at the same era is nothing to write home about either. It's not until the teams mix back together around X-Cutioner's Song that things get a little better, but still. Claremont's X-Men is the true gold standard.

what about Byrne work dud you specifically not like? what did you think of his storm?

I'm glad stormcaster will be gone soon. Meeting with Guggenheim was nice it gave me perspective on the path he chose to go with Storm. That said, it was validating because as some have said here the hammer seemed absolutely unnecessary as everything she has done so far in the book with it, she could replicate the feats on her own (especially if writers got creative with her use of powers). When Guggenheim mentioned giving her the hammer again was like putting a hat on top of a hat (ie that means its redundant and hence unnecessary) i wondered why then give it to her in the first place?

There are so many things he could have explored instead of going down the hammer route. I think there was a missed opportunity here. I would have loved for him to actually explore Ororo dealing with overcoming her challenges with the decisions she made during IvX, or even being a teacher to Kitty but none of this was done. I'm personally very happy this book is ending soon and I hope if this title is continued the next writer does her better in terms of development.

what about valeria did you not like?

I won't get too into it here, but it was the reveal if her birth. It basically undid important development and growth for Sue and Reed.
