Marvel and DC are not particularly accessible - to a degree I'll accept they never have been (and I started reading comics in the 80s), but the answer "the internet can explain" is not I think adequate, when you consider the insane proliferation of cross-overs and events, and the multiplication of titles. Take the X-Men titles from 2011 to 2014, with their multiple titles and bewildering continuity. You shouldn't have to consult google and wikipedia every time you want to make sense of a disjointed title. That doesn't strike me as a "fun" way to read. The relative lack of self contained stories makes a single title very difficult to read, and by "difficult", I don't mean it can't be done - I just mean it's annoying.
But there we are - I guess I'm getting off topic.
I do accept that with legacy numbering this should in theory be a bit easier, but it's a genuine pain for a reader to try and track back, particularly in the most intense periods of proliferating titles and continual relaunches. I don't think that can really be denied.
