The second Gremlins movie is a weird case. It's both a perfect example of the kind of sequel that overblows and exaggerates itself to the point of almost parody...and also an example of a movie that gets away with it because it's so good in its own crazy right. There's nothing scary about it, the first movie is actively mocked, and the 4th wall gets broken numerous times, but it's all too fun to be offputting. I loved it as a kid and am honestly a little surprised at how well it still holds up.

While Google-searching the image, I also came across this related sketch from Key & Peele that I'd never seen, and it's fantastic.

Phantasm II picks up after the first. The continuity is both solid and deliberately questionable. It looks better than the original, but I don't think it felt as interesting. Still, not bad, I want to see the rest of the series.

Mandy is Nicolas Uncaged in revenge horror thriller. The first half is slow, surreal, very prog rock. The second half is heavy metal. There's a lot of trippy visuals throughout. Definitely not for everyone, particularly that first half, but this is certainly an interesting movie. And Cage is actually really good in it.

There's a particular scene very similar to one from Phantasm II which had me laughing since it was pure happenstance that I watched both on the same day.

Another horror comedy, and one I find to be underrated. It's not in the same league as Young Frankenstein, and there's a bit too long of a wait in between (good) jokes at times. But the jokes that land, really land. And the attention to detail in parodying the Universal movie (and the Hammer version too, a bit) keeps the rest of it from being a chore.

    19b. Halloween (2018)

    Regular-Movie Fan: It's okay.
Halloween Fan: It's great, possibly the best one since the original. I haven't seen the second movie or the Zombie remake in a long time, and I just saw this one, so time will tell if my opinion holds on that score. But it's definitely better than 4-6 and H20. (I refuse to watch Resurrection, and comparing it to 3 is obviously apples and oranges)

Animated prequel to one of the Dead Space games. I haven't played them, but I gather that they're basically Resident Evil in space.

An alien artifact is discovered by a planetary mining operating, but before it can be taken to Earth for research, people around it start going mad, and the dead star mutating into violent monsters.

It was decent. Way better than Galaxy of Terror, at least. Bruce Boxleightener does one of the voices. He'll always be Captain Sheridan to me. I think Goku and Assaj Ventress were in there, too.

With a better third act, I think this could have been a well-regarded vamp movie with a decent cult following. Conceptually it's similar to Near Dark with a bit of John Carpenter's Vampires. The main actors are pretty good although the head vampire isn't impressive at at all considering his background.

There backstory for the vampires is interesting, it's a shame it's only in dialogue as the budget for flashbacks could have been it really cool. The production value that is in the movie is just fine. It's only the staging of the climax and some dumb decisions earlier that drag the movie down.

    It's not bad, just forgettable.

What a weird one. This is a docudrama about the real-life Arkansas urban legend, the Fouke Monster. Bigfoot, basically. Not a found-footage thing like Blair Witch or a mockumentary, this is more like a super-duper low-budget Ken Burns documentary. Or, like, a long reenactment segment from an ID Network show.

Shockingly, it apparently made a bunch of money, and is considered genuinely scary in the region by people who've grown up with the legend. It even spawned a number of sequels. Not worth watching for the scares or film-making, but maybe just because of how odd it is.

Very disappointing. They could have had a lot of silly fun with this premise. But it's just a generic Dracula tale that happens to be in the Old West. The fact that the hero is notorious outlaw Billy the Kid (now reformed) barely matters to the plot. I didn't expect great production value but this looked especially cheap, too.

Props to John Carradine for sporting a mustache and pointed beard which Dracula had in the original novel.

And props to him for taking that revolver to the face, which provided the one enjoyable moment in that movie and made me laugh my ass off.

I’m not sure I’ll ever understand the longevity of this franchise. I saw the first one for the first time last year, and thought it was fine for a one-off. The human heroes and villains weren't very compelling and the Cenobites looked cool but didn't seem to factor in much to the story. I can't say I really liked it, but I was never eager for a rewatch.

But rewatch it I did, to refresh my memory before watching the first sequel. And Hellbound did little to change my opinion. I still didn't like the human characters (although Claire Higgins was a lot better now that she was leaning into the villain role, she still wasn't great), and the Cenobites actually went down a peg in my eyes. I didn't hate the movie, but having seen it, I have very little interest in seeing what Pinhead and Co. get up to next.

John Carpenter's remake is definitely better. The cool title scene is lifted from this, though. The titular thing looks like a Frankenstein monster to me, and it never seems like it's really a dire threat to the people in the base. They manage to drive it away more than once.

I liked the naturalistic banter among the characters. They felt like people who actually knew each other. Unfortunately, most of the guys were hard to tell apart. I confused the captain for another guy more than once.

Oh yeah, that did have me laugh out loud. Bullets have no effect, but a gun to the face and Drac is knocked the **** out! They need to rewrite the vampire lore books to add thrown handguns as a weakness.

Low rent Halloween slasher ripoff set on a nearly deserted college campus. the killer gets has no mask and gets no name or backstory of any kind. I thought for a bit there was going to be something interest to the killer, with him just being a good athlete, a 'real world' take on a slasher killer, perhaps. But by the end he's just walking all the time and inexplicably seeming to teleport.
