I end up rewatching this one every year, I've really grown to love it. Karloff's grave robber is irresistible to watch, whether he's playing it innocent, committing murder, or doing what he does most often, tormenting the doctor who is both his employer and his victim (amusingly enough, named "Toddy" MacFarlane). Even the ending, in which Karloff only plays a small part, gets better to me on every viewing.

It did. One of the things I love about Anthology style films are how the themes connect overall.

Vampire Blacksploitation flick. An African prince in the 18th Century visits Count Dracula to discuss his support in ending the slave trade. As it turns out, Dracula is a huge racist asshole who kills his wife and turns the prince into a vampire and locks him in a coffin.

Jump to the 70s, and the items of Dracula's castle are bought by a couple of New York decorators. The prince wakes up, finds a woman who looks just like his dead wife, how it always goes.

William Marshall's charismatic performance is better than the material. When he vamps out he's subject to some goofy makeup and bushy eyebrows.

I never heard of this until recently. Bit of an odd duck movie, a comedic vampire modern Western. It's about an isolated town in the desert where all the residents are secretly vampires living off a synthethic blood substitute. The main characters are a human family who've come to town because the husband is needed to work on the blood machine. And unbeknownst to them, the wife's former boyfriend is now a vampire with his own agenda.

Bruce Campell has a supporting role as the nerdy descednent of Van Helsing. David Carradine plays the vampire who runs the town.

I liked the idea of the movie more than the movie itself. It seems like there's a first and third act but most of the second is missing.

I also binged Castlevania on Netflix, that was fun.

I saw this once when I was a kid on TV. I think it was just called "Q" then.

It's not very good, way too much time is spent on following Michael Moriarty as an oddball lowlife rather than focusing on the monster hunt. Jaws didn't need a subplot about an ex con trying to make it big.
As dumb as it was, they should have had David Carradine use kung fu on the monster, it wouldn't be out of place.

I've been meaning to get around to this one since it hit Netflix a couple years ago. It got a hell of a lot of praise back when it was released, and frankly, I get why. It's a throwback to a much earlier style of horror; very deliberate, character-focused, and relying more on slow-building tension and implied violence than sudden scares or gore (the image I chose notwithstanding). It's definitely not in the slasher vein. The teens aren't lined up to be on the receiving end of increasingly elaborate deaths...that movie wants you to not want any of them to die.

The plot is about a curse that is transferred between people via sex. Once you have the curse, you become pursued by an unstoppable being (an STDemon, I've seen it jokingly called) that will eventually catch you, kill you, and then on backwards down the list to whoever transferred the curse to you. The creature is invisible to anyone who isn't currently or previously cursed, though it does have to obey physical laws. You can drive away from it, but you'll eventually have to stop, and it never will. You can hide behind a door, but it'll either kick it down or stand there until someone who can't see it opens the door. It can look like anyone...a friend, a stranger, or just something horrific, whichever suits its purpose at the moment.

If I have any issue with the movie, it's a small one. This is the kind of monster where the conceit necessitates some rules, and the movie plays a little fast and loose with them. But it's forgivable, I think, since the entire movie is less concerned with what the monster is and more with what it means.

    28. The Stuff (1985)

It's an 80s Larry Cohen movie, which means social satire, Michael Moriarty, and decent but not mind-blowing creature effects.

Basically, this movie is what you get if you replace the aliens in Invasion of the Body Snatchers with the Blob. A gelatinous, prehistoric sentience attempts to take over humanity by allowing itself to be packaged and sold as an incredibly popular snack food. It has no calories and tastes really, really good...and it can take over the minds and morph the bodies of anyone who eats enough of it. Moriarty, Garrett Morris, and Paul Sorvino are both fun in it, but it's really only one part monster movie, two parts commentary of rampant consumerism and corporate greed.

I saw this movie years ago, and it really didn't do anything for me at the time. It's not scary, there are no innovative or memorable kills, and the human characters are all absolutely terrible. But this time I had a much more generous nature towards it, and enjoyed the fan-service for what it is. The premise feels like it was ripped right out of one of the "what if they met" conversations horror fans always have: Freddy impersonates Mrs. Voorhees to get Jason to start hacking up Elm Street kids, under the presumption that the murders will be blamed on Freddy, and the town's fear will replenish his fading power. But even after Freddy regains enough strength to start invading kids' dreams again, Jason just keeps killing them in real life before Freddy can get to them. Thus, conflict.

It's definitely not a good movie, but it's dumb fun. Like one of the DC crossover shows on the CW, or a random issue of Marvel Team-Up. Certainly has more bang for your buck than a lot of 70s/80s horror movies I sat through to get to the one stop-motion scene or gory kill that made it relevant.

Anthology in which a detective is investigating an actor's disapperance and is told four stories involving strange and unfortunate events that occurred to occupant's of the missing person's home. The stories feature Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, the guy who played Marcus Brody from Indiana Jones, Jon Pertwee and Ingrid Pitt in the only comical tale.

It's an interesting flick from Hammer's sister studio, Amicus. Very Edgar Allen Poe-ish, I'd say, but set in (then) modern times.

These movies are kind of like the Evil Dead, where the next one seemingly picks up where the previous left off, except not quite the same. Speaking of Evil Dead, Reggie is becoming this franchise's bald Ash. A kid with lethal Home Alone skills also joins the fray.
The original Mike actor returns to the role, and though it's only been 10 years and change in story, he looks like more than 20 have passed for him. We learn more about what the Tall Man is doing without removing the mystery about him.

Again, the direct continuity of these movies is questionable, but maybe deliberately so. I don't know if or how Reggie is supposed to now remember the events of the first movie, or what happened to somebody at the end of the third. They also really love blowing up cars in this series. This one has that 'straight to video look' that such films of the era usually did. But this one takes a contemplative approach as Mike is put through a battle for his soul, meanwhile Reggie has some more antics dealing with zombified minions. More is revealed about the Tall Man without explaining exactly what he is or what he's after. Deleted scenes from the original movie are used extensively in his one as flashbacks or dreams, it's a fairly clever mix of cost-saving and artistic choice. I was liking it until the blah ending which isn't so much a cliffhanger as it is the feeling of an incomplete movie. I imagine this must have been really annoying when the next installment was nowhere in sight for 15 years.
