    Default Recommend some Batman trades?

I've recently been collecting some Spider-Man trades, and I wanted to extend my Batman collection, but kind of have no idea where to start.

Batman: The Golden Age Omnibus. The first six volumes, chronicling Batman and Robin's early battles against Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, and Two-Face, are out right now, with seven coming later this year, with Riddler.

The Showcase Presents Batman phone book sized books are also quite fun to read, especially volumes 1-3.

Batman A Celebration of 75 Years if you want an idea of how the character's portrayed throughout history

Batman The Golden Age Volume One if you want the original chronicle

Batman Year One for the modern classic beginning

Batman Volume 1 The Court of Owls for the current continuity

YEAR ONE aside (my all time favourite) I happily recommend

    BATMAN THE CAPED CRUSADER
mid 80s stories by Jim Starlin (Thanos), really like Starlin's characterization,
can't wait to reread CULT now

TALES OF THE BATMAN GERRY CONWAY VOL 1 & 2
early 80s stories by Gerry Conway (Punisher), again great characterization
and a HUSHesque parade of the whole rogues gallery, spectacular art

BATMAN BY DOUG MOENCH & KJ
Moench writes Batman as someone who gets the necessity of a life as BruceW,
never liked KJ's art but revisiting it made me really appreciate what he goes for

What about Thrillkillers? I read up on it and it seems like a good story and the idea of a female Joker is really interesting to me.

It's a mediocre Elseworld. It doesn't really have any substance to it other than it's aesthetic.

    I really liked that one.
It had kind of a noir vibe to it.

Me too. I especially liked Dan Brereton's artwork. What's he working on now?

    Batman RIP.

Its pretty cheap right now, pretty digestible, and has a good cross-section of what makes Batman Batman.

I agree with pretty much all of the above. It really depends a lot on which era you're looking at.

The 60's and 70's were more fanciful and fun, definitely aimed more to please kids.
The 80's brought us the Batman a teenager could love, he was redefined as more bad ass as ever, and started down a path of darkness it took a long time to get out of.
The 90's is mixed really, mainly due to so many events mixing in like Zero Hour etc
The 2000's felt sort of Noir-ish to me, but your results may vary...and of course the most recent storylines seem to focus a lot on the Batman family, the Robins and Catwoman, etc are getting more development it seems (whether that's for better or worse is yet to be seen though...)

Since the great trades for Batman are listed above, I'll go the other route and tell you what I personally think can be skipped.
    Batman: Murderer
    Batman: Fugitive
War Drums/War Games (Ugh I have a bad taste in my mouth just typing that)

It doesn't really work without the rest of Morrison's Batman run preceding it.
