I remember that there seemed to be a lot of unsold/marked-down toy product when TPM got the 3D re-release in 2012. (Then again, given that some of the toys were pretty much just slightly repainted or retooled 1999 stuff didn't help).
I've always wondered if Lucas's plan to release episodes 1-6 all in 3D falling through was part of the reason he sold the company. Kind of happened around the same time.

Not quite; the 3-D rereleases were canceled to make room for the Disney movies (some of them got shown at conventions instead).
