“True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice.”
~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“If I love you, I have to make you conscious of what you don’t see.”
~James Baldwin
Last we saw, I think he was a member of the Champions of Europe. So there's a descent chance that he like Hercules was on earth rather than on Olympus.
And powerwise he might be redundent. But given his entire family was slaughtered, there's a descent story to tell there if they wanted too.
Sure, if you're willing to also build in the necessary … aberrations ... that you'd need to keep him alive longer than a couple of panels. Nyx was clearly not taking any prisoners, given what just happened to Hercules. Knowing Ares' personality and temperament, you'd have to figure out a way to save him until the final battle. Maybe even have him be the life-spring from which all of the gods are resurrected. Kind of fitting, when you think about it.

Correct; he was last seen in U.S. AVENGERS with the Champions of Europe. He actually hasn't been on Olympus for quite a while--since his resurrection he's either been on Earth or Battleworld, and prior to his resurrection he was on Earth serving stints in Bendis' Mighty Avengers and then the Dark Avengers. And he was already living on Earth, raising his son, before Tony and Carol recruited him into the Avengers in the first place.
The other thing is that Ares has been mentioned in the solicits for one of the WAR OF THE REALMS tie-in books, so he may have been deliberately left out of this storyline since he needs to be alive to appear elsewhere in a month or two.
Besides, Conan does make him redundant.

Yeah, they're just too similar. And don't forget Conan's here for three reasons: one, Zub wanted to write him again (he's written him before for Dark Horse), two, he serves the time travel element of the plot, and three, it'll probably set up Savage Avengers.
