Default The Best Score Ever Was...?

Think about the beauty of the music. Think about how it fit the film's story.

Silent or talky, of all the films that ever were, the best musical score was...?

The one that comes to mind first, is the score for ALL THAT JAZZ, which won an Academy Award for Ralph Burns in 1980. Although a lot of the score is made up of popular songs, they are arranged in new ways for the film to suit the experiences of Bob Fosse/Joe Gideon/Roy Scheider and they are performed exceptionally well by the cast.

Are we talking about a score to a straight movie, like Gone with the Wind or Raiders of the Lost Ark? Or a musical like South Pacific or Chicago?
I see them as different catgories.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

For me, Gattaca and Your Name.

They fit the story so freaking damn well.

I don't believe in anything as best score ever was... but I remember some of my favourites.

I was a big fan of James Horner (RIP)

His Score from Titanic and Apollo 13

I love others including Every Score John Williams did for the Harry Potter movies

For Superhero movies, this is my all time favourite Score. X-Men First Class

Chicago Bears 46, New England Patriots 10, 1985.

Couldn't resist. For me, star Wars.

I agree with the above that the question is so broad, that it's difficult to answer.

I think a musical is different than a music score. In fact, I know they're different.

For best musical, it would likely be something by Rogers and Hammerstein. Maybe Sound of Music or Oklahoma.

For best score, comics movies are the ones that spring to mind instantly because I'm a comics fan. So, I'd probably go with the old reliable: Superman by John Williams.

South Pacific was awesome, but I was thinking of non-musocal scores. I agree that Musicals are a different category.

I have to resist saying "everything John Williams ever did." That said, I lean towards Raiders of the Lost Ark.

While I don't want to knock anyone else's opinions...

    There's really -

    - Yojimbo up on it's own level.
    - A level below that where everything else starts.
