"All that content" could well be deceiving. A great deal of that may have been the third act they scrapped.

Also, this movie is paying for a decade of sins this franchise has built up with audiences. They're going to lose a ton of money, but what hurts most is the brand is badly damaged. People, at one point, loved the X-men and turned out for it at theaters. Now? The movie going audience is "meh". That's the worst part. Like the movie if you want, but recognize the damage this studio is done.

Someone on the editing team confirmed that this screenrant article is 100% correct about the changes.

So Scott and Jean’s relationship was a major part of the film and it was character driven.

If you go IMO catch a matinee this isn't Aquaman or Endgame where seeing it on the big screen will benefit your experience.

The comic book continuity is MESSY as hell, especially when coming to the crappy "Phoenix Force" concept they added later on in order to launch the redundant and shoddy X-Factor title.

In the Foxverse, original timeline(s), "PHOENIX" was the alternate personality of Jean Grey - generated by Xavier's heavy mental blocks over the years. In the original timeline, Jean ALREADY displayed the "firebird energy signature", because that is his natural mutant power. Period. "The Last Stand" established it, canonically. Like it or not.

There are several hints in X2 too, however.

In the new timeline, she never developed an alternate personality, because Xavier's mental blocks were VERY limited. He just suppressed the memories of the car incident and her father's refusal/repulsion.

She absorbed the "shapeless" Cosmic Force, and the Force became one with her and her Phoenix power. That's it. She did not develop any alternate personality, but she was driven "insane/out of control" by this unlimited, infinite power. Much more in line with Claremont's continuity and original intent back in the seventies, right? Right.

She is Phoenix. She has been Phoenix since "Apocalypse" occurred. Case closed.

X-Factor with the 05 was awesome and better than any damn thing these films ever produced.

You know, one of the things I love about this film is that they both have credible arguments.

On the one hand, Xavier is likely making the world a safer place for a mutants by improving their public image. On the other hand, there hasn't been a fundamental change with regard to the public fear and mistrust. And of course mutants shouldn't need to jump through hoops to prove themselves. But this is the X-Men world as it is, and both Xavier and Mystique try as best they can to make things better.

If I may add, the X-Men: TAS handled Dark Phoenix much better; not only was it better paced, but each episode was itself a coherent piece AND the overall arc clocks in at slightly less time than the movie (each episode being 22 min b/c of credits and commercials), which means it was edited more tightly, too. The movie advertising's claim that Scott would be the most prominent X-Man still clinging onto hope turned out to be a lie when Storm and Xavier stepped up, whereas the cartoon made Scott and Jean's love the real hero against the Phoenix Force.

Well, contrary to the contamined popular belief, the X-Men movies had always been deeply centered on a group of characters, not a sole character. Fact is, even if THAT specific group which the movies were centered on WASN'T the "classic" X-Men roster you wanted, well, you cannot truly deny the fact that the X-Men movies were focused on the story-arc and the character-arc of a chosen GROUP of characters.

    X-Men/X2/The Last Stand were about:

    Professor X
    Magneto
    Wolverine
    Jean Grey
    Rogue (at least in X1)

First Class/Days of Future Past/Apocalypse/Dark Phoenix were about:

    Professor X
    Magneto
    Mystique
    Beast
Jean Grey (in the last two)

Like it or not, you cannot say these movies were NOT character-driven, despite being not focused on the other "X-Men" or the "X-Men" as a battlefield team.

19 years and 7 characters thank you for pointing out the massive flaw to the X-Men films.

You can say the same for the MCU. 7 characters. Years don't matter. We had Wolverine solo movies and Deadpool solo movies in the middle.
