Default What If? Jean Grey didn't die during New X-Men?

How do you guys think she would have changed during the decade and a half preceding her return? From House of M's "No more mutants." To Utopia, the Schism, AvX and any other notable era I could be forgetting. Do you think she and Scott would have worked things out? And if they had, would she have become a mutant revolutionary like him? Or would she have been able to show the X-Men a different path?

I think so much of what happened wouldn't have happened.
They probably would have worked things out but if we still had stuff like schism and avx they would have broke up.
no revolutionary Jean, in fact she would be on the opposite side.

It would have been a much less sexist and more open-ended, more interesting story.

She could have stopped Logan from naming their school after her, for one thing lol.

Yeah, if she was alive the school definitely wouldn't have been named after her. Teen Jean always found it awkward.

I could see Jean being the headmistress in Wolverine and the X-Men, Extraordinary X-Men and X-Men Gold, instead of Kitty and Storm.

An apocalyptic future ruled by a sentient stack of bacteria would happen.

The biggest change would have been with Scott. Phoenix Ressurection indicates that they likely would have eventually worked things out. This means Scott probably would have stayed in his comfort zone where leading the X-Men was concerned.

I still think most if not all of the events that went afterwords like House of M would have gone down without much different. The only two events that may have been majorly impacted by her presence were Schism and AvX.

The world would be drastically different. Assuming she's still Phoenix during this time, No More Mutants wouldn't have mattered, since the Phoenix can simply reverse that (as AvX shows). So Schism never happens since the mutants never have to take a hardline stance since they wouldn't be in danger of extermination. Messiah Complex never occurs, because Jean isn't orchestrating Hope's existence from the WHR (and without NMM, she isn't needed anyway). AvX obviously never occurs for a multitude of reasons.

    So... yeah.

    > Schism might've still happened. Maybe Scott and Jean vs. Logan and Emma

    > Jean might've had a bigger role in Time Runs Out/Secret Wars as Phoenix
    > Terrigen Mist garbage plays out differently (Scott might still die or her instead)

That one has implications for other books. Of course All-New X-Men and X-Men Blue would've had different casts. All-New Wolverine would've played out slightly differently because of Angel's absence. Champions #2-18 would've been different because they'd have had to have a different sixth member.

IMO, things would've played out mostly the same until "End of Greys" when the Shi'ar wiped out the Grey family. That's the inflection point. Jean would've been really, supremely pissed off. It would've been her and Scott going after Vulcan instead of Alex and Lorna in "The Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire." I think that would've played out much as it did so Scott and Jean would've been stuck in space until after "War of Kings."

That would've left Storm, Havok, Wolverine, and Emma as the potential leader figures on Earth with the X-Men. With Scott in space after "Deadly Genesis", it's possible Xavier would've reasserted his leadership role and been in charge when Scott and Jean got back. Perhaps, then, "Schism" would've still happened but in a different way. Xavier on one side, Scott and Jean on the other. Or, maybe not. Where things get really interesting is with AvX. Would Jean have taken Emma's place among the Phoenix Five? Or, given her past experience with the Phoenix, would she have rejected it and opposed the P5? Would Jean becoming a Phoenix again negated the need for Hope? Could Jean have restarted the X-gene herself?

Where Wanda was concerned, I picture Jean trying harder than most to really try to dive in and help her, but it would have proved futile and House of M would have still happened.

Deadly Genesis would be before Rise and Fall of Shi'ar since that's the first appearance of Vulcan. Honestly if Deadly Genesis occured with Jean and the other 4 OGs still alive, the 5 of them would've still kicked out Xavier and taken over school operations. Rachel and Alex might still be on the team that goes after Vulcan while the O5 run the School on Earth.

AvX is a pain to figure out how it would turn out since it relies on plots set up in Decimation and Messiah Complex.

I could see Marvel depowering her on M-Day. Then, without powers, the Phoenix has no interest in her so they have to find some other way to solve it, or Hope becomes the new Phoenix host. So almost everything up to AvX would stay the same, except Jean and Scott would probably have stayed together.

Relationships might be different but there would still be conflict. The X-Office mandates would override any character. On another note X-Men Red probably wouldn't exist or would be radically different. Jean might be a bit different too from the ways she could have been written over the 14 years she spent dead.
