    The ff have had more the four members many times. Even wizard talked about how they are called four but have had many more in a issue. Ms marvel was the 5th member for a time and before heroes reborn they had about 7 members!

    Still don't get the "spidey can't join a team" talk. Spidey had been on more teams iron man or cap! Even before bendis spidey was a FULL avengers for three issues before going in as a reserve. That's a longer time then the hulk!

    Also don't forget this what if story. (didn't have a happy ending however)

    It would make the FF more interesting to me but it did not work out well in the What if.

    If they were to add a new member it should be someone who adds something they do not have and Spidey does do that. Plus he is a contemporary of Johnny, A fellow scientist like Reed, and a caretaker like Ben and Sue.

    Even Stan and Jack themselves were lenient with the strictness of the number. Count the heroes on these covers. And there was a series of letters discussing a possible name change. i don't know how seriously Marvel thought about it or when they grabbed the TM on Fantastic Five, but there are people born after these issues that are grandparents now.

    Not really; I think Spidey works better as a solo character who has occasional guest-stars in his own series. In any event, for team-based team-ups, the X-Men always made more sense then the F4, IMHO.
    Doctor Strange: "You are the right person to replace Logan."
    X-23: "I know there are people who disapprove... Guys on the Internet mainly."

    I don't get it either. He has been on all the teams for some length Avengers, Defenders, FF, there was even a Spiderman and the Xmen book for 5 minutes or so. Added to more team ups than anyone he is a proven them player. Hell he can keep up with Reed in science and make Wolverine laugh, what team can't use that.

    The Walt Simonson run also had five members with Sharon as the fifth.

    I think the biggest issue with putting Spider-man on the FF is that the writers may have an inclination to use Spider-man more than the four themselves. After all, the big selling point of a Fantastic Five is a fifth member, that member being Spider-man. It begins to ask questions in regards to what this book even is;

    A.) A Fantastic Four book that happens to include Spider-man
    Or
    B.) A Spider-man book that happens to include the Fantastic Four

    The book can be balanced, but it raises questions as to what that book is and especially whose editors this falls under. And it's long-established the Spider-office is terrible an you can't do anything with Peter unless you are on a main book.

    If anything I'd suggest it be the equivalent of a Team-up book with a rotating fifth member. Something that the FF needs is to explore new worlds and new concepts and meet new characters. However they also have a long history with the rest of the MU, so in this book they should dive into that history and go on an adventure with an associated character to keep things different from the mainline book.

    A way to do it is make it a choice of the character, kind of like a broad version of Marvel Two in one
    1. Introduce the concept of a rotating membership with a member picked by one of the four
    2. Reed's choice
    3. Sue's Choice
    4. Johnny's choice
    5. Ben's choice
    6. Mystery member

    The mystery member can be switched out for a two-part arc to keep things fresh. The mystery member could be anyone the four has a connection to and thus keep things interesting.

    So you have a;
    Mainline Fantastic Four title
    A book exploring the relationships of the team in MTIO
    And a book exploring their connections to the broader MU in F5.
