Default Oh, No. First Man may be flopping.

It won't be following the footsteps of Hidden Figures and Apollo 13I never expected the flag controversy to affect the movie this much.

And I don't think we have any info to show that is why.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

Theres no scene where they plant the flag. The director stated they wanted to focus on many scenes with Armstrong and that one wasnt particularly relevant for the story. Lunatic americans are screeching that this film is 'not patriotic and ashamed to be american' whilst the Cheeto avoided doing more Presidental work and threw his opinion in that its ashamed to be american and he wont be watching it.

TLDR - Nationalism, its a hell of a drug.

The film does not include the part of Apollo 11 mission where the American flag was planted on the moon. Right-wing media outlets have since seized this information and started the narrative that this film disrespects the flag, with some places exaggerating the story to say that the film features no American flags at all (which is false, and the flag on the moon is shown, just not the planting itself). Even conservatives as high as Senator Marco Rubio have voiced their displeasure with this, despite not having seen the film when this news broke.

Personally I think it's less to do with the flag and more with it coming out right on the heels of two films (Venom + A Star is Born) that have already captured the attention of the audiences, similarly to how Black Panther devoured so many of the films released in its wake.

A movie about how the US put a man on the moon is inherently patriotic. I don't think people know what words mean.

Cheap patriotism is always a sad spectacle.

Gosling's recent movies haven't performed that well in the Box Office.

Although I think the flag controversy was overblown. the director should have put that in the film. it is an iconic part of the apollo 11 mission. Maybe just as Houston we have a problem from Apollo 13.

Even if it is, who cares? It’s just a movie
