What are some good comics to get into the cosmic side of DC?

I am really familiar with the occult and superhero corners of the DC Universe. The more space themed DC Comics? Not so much. So I'm asking you, what are the best science fiction based comics set in the DC Universe wherein one can gain more or an understanding of that side of DC?

The Cosmic side of DC has a few sides that crosses a few times:
- The Green Lanterns / The Yellow Lanterns / Sinestro / All the other colors
- The Omega Men
- The New Gods / Orion /Darkseid (aka The Fourth World)
- a little bit Superman
- and a little bit the Justice League

What to read:

for Darkseid / New God
- of course the original material by Jack Kirby - The Forth World by Jack Kirby - It's a big omnibus, it's old, but I found it very pleasant to read.
- for a more modern take on Darkseid you can read Legends - In which you get the modern creations of the Justice League and the Suicid Squad
- and for a more recent take on Darkseid you can also read Darkseid War - Part of the New52 era

for the Omega Men
- well of course Omega Men by Tom King - but I haven't read it so can't tell you anything about it

for the Lanterns
- well there are many things good runs and arcs you could read, but the one that brought a lot to the Lanterns is Geoff Johns' run, which is Epic. Yes pic up the ultra massive omnibus Green Lanterns by Geoff Johns ! - You'll get great arcs and origin stories !
- The you can continue the New52 run and follow with the Rebirth run of Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps which has been very good.
- another very very fun read, but less cosmic is the Green Lanter / Green Arrow omnibus.

for Superman
- I would recommand the real recent Oz Effect.

for Justice League
- well I've already mentionned Legends and Darkseid War.

For a little old school try L.E.G.I.O.N. and Darkstars.

Rann/Thanagar War was pretty good. I liked how the Green Lantern of the story (Kyle) was just one player in a bigger world of characters.
And I also liked that Blackfire got used outside of the Titans as a major DC villain for once.

[Zero Hunter]

DC did a short lived series a few years back called Threshold: The Hunted. It only ran 8 issues but it had a lot of crazy DC properties in it like Space Cabbie and Star Hawkins. It also had a Green Lantern, Blue Beetle, a New God, and so much more. It is well worth a look to see some of the lesser touched on side of cosmic DC.

I would bet that Morrison's upcoming "The Green Lantern" will be a good diversion into the cosmic side of the DCU.

If you're looking for general sci-fi in DC comics there is the series Star Hunters (but it was cancelled by issue 7 and was unfinished) and an anthology series Time Warp with several stories in each issue.

That last series was fantastic. All of the L.E.G.I.O.N. and R.E.B.E.L.S. books are well worth reading.
