Comic fans get the comics their buying habits deserve.

This'll be a good way to get recommendations.
Right now, it's 1. Alan Moore
2. Stan Lee
3. Frank Miller
4. Grant Morrison
5. Neil Gaiman
6. Mark Millar
7. Garth Ennis
8. Brian Michael Bendis
9. Warren Ellis
10. Mark Waid
Geoff Johns, Bryan K Vaughan, Kurt Busiek, Peter David, Jonathan Hickman, and Ed Brubaker are close.
Potential top ten candidates (as I read more of their work) would be Roger Stern (I need to read his complete Avengers and Doctor Strangeruns ), Jason Aaron (need to catch up on his X-Men and Southern Bastards), Scott Snyder (need to catch up on American Vampire), Osamu Tezuka, Carl Barks, Kazuo Koike (I need to check out his non- Lone Wolf and Cub stuff), and Harvey Kurtzman (there's a lot of EC comics for me to check out)
Sincerely,
Thomas Mets
This won't stretch back before the mid-80s because though I respect great creators from before then, I find most comics fairly difficult to read from back then. Special mention, though, to Will Eisner and Steve Gerber, who don't quite make the cut but strike me as being ahead of their times and their work is much more accessible to modern readers.
In no order with a couple of notable works in brackets...
Alan Moore (Watchmen, Top 10)
Grant Morrison (All-Star Superman, Animal Man)
Neil Gaiman (Sandman)
Garth Ennis (Preacher, Hitman)
Mark Waid (The Flash, Kingdom Come)
Greg Rucka (Gotham Central, Queen and Country)
Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise, Echo)
Ed Brubaker (Catwoman, Fatale)
Rick Remender (Deadly Class, Fear Agent)
And it may be too early to say but...
Tom King (Mr Miracle, Sherriff of Babylon)
There are also people like Kurt Busiek, James Robinson, Bendis, Warren Ellis and Peter Milligan who are absolutely brilliant at their peak but are too inconsistent to quite make the top 10, and people like Brian Vaughan, Bryan Lee O'Mally, Darwyn Cooke, Jeff Smith, Peter David and Scott McCloud who just miss making the cut too. And, yes, I realise I can make a pretty great alternate top 10 with these names.
