Forget if I posted this before here, but I actually liked the idea of X-23 and Mercury getting together, based on their time in the New X-Men comics. I was never really a fan of any of the relationships they wrote for X-23 in the story; teen Angel seemed to be a nice guy, but I found the relationship to be boring in execution and not a lot there narrative-wise.
Unpopular opinion, but I really didn't like her and Hellion back in the New X-Men era; he was quite the jerk and they didn't seem to communicate that well (and that's not going into how toxic it all was when X-23 broke off whatever they had her first solo series). I will say that, as a failed relationship, Hellion/X-23 was interesting and I did like the complexity we saw in the breakup (lot of miscommunication and missteps from both of them in terms of handling things, but X-23 being given the agency to decide that she didn't want a relationship and standing up for herself when Hellion didn't take that well).
In the case of Mercury, way back when, she was shown to make the effort to befriend X-23 (one of the first) and they were shown to be mutually supportive and willing to open up to each other. They also had common ground in feeling disconnected from the rest of humanity, even by the standards of the average mutant. It was a nice friendship that I really wish that Marvel would remember. While reading a romantic relationship into what there was would obviously be beyond the authors' intent, what there was would've worked as the starting point to develop one and it looks like it could've been one that would've been good for both of them.
Doctor Strange: "You are the right person to replace Logan."
X-23: "I know there are people who disapprove... Guys on the Internet mainly."
