Here are some of my picks
Batman #313
Drawn by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez this a cover to the first part of a 1979 two-parter Two Face story… Just look at this dark moody beauty, It just screams film noir and a bit horror. The Batman emerges for the shadows, silently approaching the grotesque Two-Face sitting in the dark plotting his next heinous crime. You get some deadly surprise is about to sprung upon the Dark Knight as surely you can’t capture Dent this easily. I love cover the ominous moon outside the window, Batman’s dragging cape, Harvey’s hideout, split between a clean fancy apt and a dirty run down shack.
Batman #451
This one was draw by the late great Norm Breyfogle. This one of the great Joker images of all time, it’s the second part of Joker big return following in his apparent death in Death of the Family. The comic itself ain’t that great but man this cover it just feel explosive, the bursting Tommy Gun, Joker crazing laughing face and of course a shadow cloaked batman lunging in the background. It’s like the cover is going to leap out at you, I love that Joker is wearing a hat and trench coat as that makes this image stand out even more and he’s firing at bats.
Batman #296
Made in 1977 and drawn by Salomon Dona, this is an amazing Scarecrow cover as he’s the one villain Batman fears, the only foe who can give the Dark Knight a taste of his own medicine. Here we have a completely terrified Batman (look at his face), desperately running from a huge nightmarish Scarecrow. You get the feeling he’s doomed as Crane isn’t even moving forward yet he’s right on Batman’s heels. I also get a scientist vibe from Scarecrow which is an important part of the character, it’s just the way the tiny Batman is running hopelessly like a lab rat in a maze and the massive Scarecrow appears to be bending down to pick the helpless Batman up and hold him in the Palm of his hand like a sinister scientist toying with Guinea Pig.
