    Brought from the Satellite thread:

Rima is a Victorian -> Pulp era public domain character.
She predates even Tarzan, and all the derivative "Jungle Girl" characters that came later.
From the 1904 W.H. Hudson novel Green Mansions (great story FYI)

Later a 1959 film starring Audrey Hepburn

DC published a Rima comic in 1974 with beautiful art by Nestor Redondo

In 1977 Hanna Barbera looking to add more diversity/women to their JL / Super Friends along with the HB created Apache, Vulcan, Dorado and Samurai, added DC's version of Rima to the roster.

I say DC's version because there were some differences from the novel, DC's pretty much evolved into her own character. A particular image was her white Jaguar.

DC has since somewhat reworked the character into their attempt Pulp First Wave line. Again somewhat different from the original novel version, yet also closer to the original "bird-girl" aspect.

But DC doesn't (and never did) own the character outright, others can publish their own version.

Ironically Hanna Barbera had another cartoon in 1978 called Jana, which also borrows heavily from not only the Novel, but DC's version of Rima, including the whitish hair, and the white Jaguar.
With DC/WB acquiring the Hanna Barbera library, the irony is that WB/DC actually do own this version, but don't use her.

I really thought the comics were well done. They had great villains, great guest stars, and great stories. And I loved the Global Guardians

Loved the tv show. It's what got my hooked on super hero comics.

I've been a fan of the Super Friends since day one! The only version I don't like is the JLU one. I felt it was too much of a departure from the original concepts of Apache Chief, Black Vulcan, Samurai, and the Wonder Twins.
Currently(or soon to be) Reading: Alan Scott: Green Lantern, Batman/Superman: World's Finest, Fire & Ice: Welcome to Smallville, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, Jay Garrick: The Flash, Justice Society of America, Power Girl, Superman, Shazam, Titans, Wesley Dodds: Sandman, Wonder Woman, & World's Finest: Teen Titans.

I actually like the JLU version a lot (aside from them not being real people) because it departed from the dated ham-fisted attempt at diversity, making them look like "ethnics on parade." If Black Vulcan wasn't a take on the pre-existing Black Lightning, I can only imagine what they would have come up with for a black hero.

It is interesting in marketing the toys they went with their more traditional recognizable version, rather than the JLU Ultimen incarnation.

Although I agree it was a bit to much of a departure, and their origin; tested and created in a lab as experiments, (I hate that).
Also loathe that they made the Wonder-Twins super white(albino) as they were one of the first representations of humanoid aliens who were not default caucasian looking.
Which was significant to me as a kid.

And I'm aware they were somewhat Donny and Mary inspired, still Hanna Barbera did something that was unique at the time,
So making them suddenly Albino seemed like a betrayal. Their casting in Smallviile was awful too.

However I did like some of the JLU visual updates to their costumes and names,
They didn't brandish their ethnicity in their costume, and names.
Yet it was obvious we were looking at the same characters.
Although they sadly missed having an El Dorado analogue, it looks like their LongShadow (in costume anyway) borrowed some elements from both Apache and Dorado.

Agree. Near quoting my sentiments verbatim.
If they were going to (or still are) going to homage them, they need some serious reinvention.
Updating their costumes and look on JLU was a great first step.
Another is giving them actual unique personalities, and civilian ID's which their YJ version pretty much did.
Somewhere there is a great middle ground.

With some reinvention, these characters could easily work in DC proper.
Encompassing all their cartoon incarnations from Superfriends > JL Animated U > Young Justice: they can become:

    1. Tye- Apache-Long-shadow
    2. Buster-Volt-Jones-(using the name of Vulcan's voice actor)
    3. Toshio-Samurai-Wind-Dragon-Eto
    4. Eduardo-Desperado-Dorado

And they have since added -

    5. Asami-Chi-Koizumi. Kind of a Samurai Legacy (or they could make her his sister), but also her own character, instead of wind power Chi or Qi (氣) power.
    6. - And although not created for the cartoon Rima.

    7. The Exor Twins

All together they make their own Magnificent Seven team.
Giving them costumes which incorporate elements from HB and JLU
And then giving them civilian ID's which parallel their YJ versions, but slightly older.

There is some great fan art out there:
This is a little excessive, but I like the designs.

Very cool! Nice to see a thread for the Super Friends!

I was a fan of both the TV show and comic book, and I have a bunch of memorabilia from both. One item I don't have is a set of Wonder Twins rings. Somewhere along the line, people started thinking that Zan's & Jayna's powers were activated by rings. They're not. LOL

If anyone is interested, I made an appreciation thread for the Wonder Twins, and discussions range from their first appearances to their upcoming monthly title in February.
