    Default Asterix translator Anthea Bell dies

    Anthea Bell, the Englishwoman who translated Asterix comics from French into English while still keeping it full of puns, has died at 82. Here is her obituary.

    I saw that. It feels odd to grieve somebody whose name I didn't even know when she was alive. But she was brilliant translating Asterix. It is amazingly difficult to translate humor--puns just don't work when you go into another language. But she did brilliant work with Asterix. I am in awe at her skill. May she rest in peace and joy.

    The ability to take distinct French plays on words and replace them with completely different English language plays on words while at the same time retaining the basic meaning of the scene... Well, I think very few could have done what she did.
