Sadly... comics have even outpaced inflation.

I remember that ad. I always wanted to read it, but there were no LCS in my area, and I couldn't afford the subscription at the time.

The DC CHALLENGE was in the Baxter books with a higher price than the regular comics, so I only bought a couple of issues.

One of my favourite things about DC, when I started buying comics, were the Direct Currents columns. Since I could only afford about two comics per week (or one Giant) at best, it was the Direct Currents where I read about most of the other comics DC was putting out. I would never get them, but I could feed on what Direct Currents told me about them.

The early Direct Currents were written by E. Nelson Bridwell who used the moniker of the "Old Electrician" for the columns. Almost twenty years ago, I was buying up a lot of random 1960s comics from the LCS just so I could get most of the Direct Currents entries for that time period.

--Early Direct Currents column from ADVENTURE COMICS 343, on sale in February 1966--along with a Cap's Hobby Hints, by Henry Boltinoff (another thing I loved about DC).

Not sure if this has been posted yet - a lot of these aren't showing up for me for some reason.
