Totally agree with you. His optic beams are basically useless nowadays, I don't need it to be Black Bolt voice level of damage, but the thought of Cyclops without his visor on a city should be scary, currently it isn't. He should be able to level a building, destroy a Sentinel, cut steel, punch a hole through a mountain. A normal human should not survive a direct hit of Cyclop's powers.

About the hand to hand combat, the reason why he should be good is simple, he is the guy that while his friends are in the pool, or playing, he is on the Danger Room training or reviewing the last mission.

Batman doesn't have superpowers, and yet he's the best rated and most popular superhero in the world. And why? Because he's a master strategist and tactician, and he's a great martial arts master.
Oh, yes, and Bruce is a lousy father, like Scott, and yet, no one hates him for it.
Cyclops doesn't need superpowers to become a superhero like Thor or Hulk. Come on, just look at Green Arrow, he is basically a guy in a mask that is very good at shooting arrows.

Cyclops has the greatest of all powers. He IS a master strategist and tactician, and he carries with him the greatest power of all: a brave heart.

Cyclops optic blast has always been one of the most inconsistent powers around. Sometimes they can destroy mountains, buildings or giant enemies... other times seams he can´t even knock out Toad. I mean, or he is really bad using his powers and could not be called a teacher, or writers make him really inconsistent.

Never understood how sunglasses were ever effective since they didn't cover his eye socket. It *should* leak out around...just ditch the visor and have him self regulate.

Training in martial arts like Daredevil is definitely the next logical step. Totally agree.

He is always right, that's his secondary mutation!

I would be satisfied with a consistent power level and with him learning how to control it, Bendis in the start of his run really look like he was going in that direction, but it went nowhere.

But Cyclops does have powers, which are supposedly incredibly powerful, but in actuality aren't. The comparison with Batman and such doesn't work.
