This is wholesale, the orders were placed months ago before any critical response.
    Context is king.

X-23's most basic surface level characteristic that any idiot should grasp: Stoicism.
I don't demand that her every minor appearance be a nuance in-depth examination of her character, but is it to much to ask she be written in Archetype?! This is storytelling 101! If you want people to stay invested in a character, you need to, at the bare minimum, write them such a way that they can plausibly be believed to be the same character!

I know but... why is the flagship X-Men title being ordered under Venom and Fantastic Four on just its second issue?

That makes some sense but there have been gimmicky weekly titles that have sustained far better than this. And it's sadder if the huge price had to boost UXM #1.

Venom surpasses most X-Titles, in both storytelling and art. It's not really surprising. Critics love it, readers find out the book is as good or better than they say, it's predictable that it does this well. It's not only the fact that the X-Books are not that good, it's the fact that stuff like Venom, Hulk, Black Panther and Doctor Strange are on a particularly interesting phase.

Venom's film has also surpassed any X-film, including Deadpool, in the global box office. I think it's fair to say that without a Claremont at the wheel, the X-Men concept doesn't translate as well to a wider audience as a sillier, more simple, action/comdey-based concept like Venom.

Retailers know how to order, it is sort of their job. 50% drop-off is expected, high number of variant covers inflates the #1 numbers above what they would normally order so the drop-off is worse. That is, without all the crazy incentive covers retailers may have only ordered 130K, so issue number 2 orders reflect the demand they expect.

Guess the X-Men don't have as much pull as they used to on the printed page.
Doctor Strange: "You are the right person to replace Logan."
X-23: "I know there are people who disapprove... Guys on the Internet mainly."
    (All-New Wolverine #4)
